Chapter 15 - Chapter 14

The aerial boulevard is a miracle.

The densely packed underground city is a miracle.

The humans who created these miracles are the miracle of miracles.

That year, 23-year-old Fu Luo had not yet been baptized by blood and war, and was unbelievably naive. Yang Ning was just a young man overshadowed by his father's shadow, gloomy and deeply scheming. Ye Wenlin was still serving in Dagger for a high salary...

Those rising stars had not yet had time to mature, and the heroes about to fall had not yet completed their final missions.

All of humanity was still engrossed in analyzing various economic indicators, looking forward to what eye-catching things the major brands would create next season.

And so, the most beautiful old era came to an end without anyone noticing.

After that day, Fu Luo spent more than half a month in a daze. The holiday had entered the countdown, and she was still at a loss about her future.

Her desk was near the floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing her to overlook the city from a high vantage point.

This three-tiered city had already matured, and even after living here for more than 20 years, every time she looked at it, Fu Luo was still amazed by its prosperity.

She stood by the window, calculating that she only had less than five days of vacation left before her reporting date, and suddenly had an urgent desire to have a strategy guide, an urgent desire to have an older person share their experience with her.

When dreams and life are torn apart, she suddenly felt a sense of helplessness and disorientation.

Whenever young people reach a critical moment in their lives, such as when choosing a school or career, they eagerly search for all kinds of experiences, and as long as someone is willing to share a little, they would almost regard it as a golden rule.

But adults are always very helpless, because there is really nothing good to say about the past.

Because memories are flat, and for everyone, the only thing that is unforgettable is always the present.

At this moment, her phone rang. Fu Luo answered it and was surprised to find that it was someone from the Space Security Department. The staff member politely asked her to make another statement about what happened at General Yang's house and personally go to the Security Department to sign it.

This was a routine procedure that Fu Luo had learned about in school, so she was not surprised. She made an appointment and planned to leave early to get the statement confirmed before the Security Department closed.

Just as she was about to pack up and turn off the computer, Robin suddenly walked out from the inner office, gently knocked on the door between the suites to get Fu Luo's attention.

"Come here for a moment."

Fu Luo paused and walked into Robin's office, which was always a mess no matter what time it was.

"Sit down." Robin said, taking out a new cup from the cupboard and pouring her a cup of tea, "You're leaving in a few days, talk to your uncle."

Fu Luo was stunned, "But just now the Security Department..."

"It won't take long, I don't intend to give a long speech." Robin interrupted her, taking out a large gift box from under the table, "Graduation gift."

Fu Luo hesitated for a moment before taking it, pulling the ribbon to reveal a set of clothes in the exquisite gift box - a jacket, shirt and trousers, the coveted limited edition "General" series.

"It's your size." Robin said, "I had someone alter it for you again, it won't be so tight that it's uncomfortable - but it doesn't matter if it's not altered, I see you seem to have lost some weight these past few days, something on your mind?"

Fu Luo didn't know what to say, nor did she know if there was any deeper meaning behind Robin giving her a set of "General" clothes.

"When I was your age, I was also very miserable," Robin sat on the sofa, leaning slightly forward with his elbows on his knees, "Everyone said I was a sissy, they talked behind my back, saying what kind of man is always so interested in women's things, am I a hooligan or a pervert?"

"No matter how many revolutions take place, no matter how many times productivity explodes, bringing waves of thought liberation, such things always exist... A society without discrimination is not a human society." Robin gave a bitter smile, then calmly said, "When I couldn't take it anymore and left your mother's unit, quitting to become an apprentice at a dynamic photo studio, they all said to me, 'Luo Xiaobo, that weirdo, is indeed crazy'."

Fifteen years had passed, and he had long since transformed from the anxious poor boy of the past into a successful person with a strong aura, and could even mention that most difficult time with ease.

Fu Luo stared at him blankly.

Robin charmingly spread his hands, "Anyway, I've become like this now, not good or bad, right?"

He was so humble that it was almost hypocritical.

Fu Luo's gaze fell on the gift box in her hands, and she asked in a low voice, "So you mean, I..."

"What I mean is," Robin interrupted her, patting her shoulder forcefully, "You're not young anymore, you have to handle things yourself."

With that said, Robin stood up and opened the office door, "If it really doesn't work out, you can come back here. I see that you're not too busy juggling the three roles of repairman, model, and 'assistant's assistant', you have a bright future - go, didn't you make an appointment with the Security Department? We commoners won't delay your important business."

Ten minutes later, Fu Luo, holding the gift from Robin, absentmindedly got into the car to the Security Department. She pondered every hint and body language of Robin's words along the way, in a daze as she was led by the staff to confirm her statement and sign it, before continuing to walk out in a distracted state.

Unexpectedly, this time Fu Luo encountered an "acquaintance" at the door.

"Colonel Yang?"

Yang Ning was walking briskly with his head down, his face stern, the furrows between his brows seeming to have deepened. Hearing her voice, he came back to his senses.

Yang Ning paused, recognizing Fu Luo - for some reason, he had a very deep impression of this seemingly impetuous little girl.

"Oh... it's you." Yang Ning's brows had not yet relaxed, but he was already smiling first, which made his smile seem to have an indescribable heaviness and weariness. His voice was still gentle and kind, "How come you seem to have lost a lot of weight in just a few days? Young girls, health is more important, it's better not to diet recklessly."

Fu Luo did not explain. School had not taught her to explain to superiors, so she simply responded, "Yes."

"It's less than a month before you officially enlist, right?" Yang Ning casually chatted with her as he walked out.

Unexpectedly, this sentence hit Fu Luo's sore spot, and her eyes dimmed in an instant.

Yang Ning, accustomed to observing words and expressions, glanced at her and patiently asked, "What's wrong?"

Fu Luo pondered for a long time. Perhaps because neither of her parents were reliable, Fu Luo had always appeared more reserved than her peers since she was young. However, she was still too young after all. Growing up in a simple and smooth environment, even a luxurious one, when facing things she had never faced before, her so-called "inside and outside" was reduced to a thin layer, allowing someone with a keen eye to see through at a glance.

"If..." After a long time, she hesitantly asked, "If a person has always dreamed of doing something, but everyone thinks it's not good and tries to dissuade her, what should she do?"

She spoke incoherently, leaving people quite puzzled. But Yang Ning, the astute colonel, only needed to turn it over slightly in his mind to connect it with Fu Luo's father, Wang Yizheng.

In the current situation, wouldn't it be human nature for someone astute about the situation to prevent their child from going to the front lines?

The car was already waiting at the door. An orderly stepped forward and opened the car door for him. Yang Ning looked back at Fu Luo. The young girl's face showed obvious loss and confusion, making Yang Ning unable to hold back a smile.

Yang Ning first held the car door with one hand and asked quite politely, "Do you need me to give you a ride?"

Fu Luo shook her head, "Thank you Colonel, my home is not far."

"Hmm," Yang Ning didn't insist. But before getting in the car, he couldn't help but give a tip as if possessed, "Listen to what childish things you're saying."

Fu Luo watched Colonel Yang's car disappear into the distance, completely failing to understand his point.

"Childish things?"

She walked along the street towards home, not knowing where she had hit Colonel Yang's funny bone.

When passing through the business district, Fu Luo saw that the reports of Robin's new product launch had already filled the huge screen in the center. The print model photos of the "General" series were particularly eye-catching amidst the purple and red. From time to time, groups of two or three shopping citizens would stop, take out their phones to take pictures of the screen, or stand aside to comment.

Fu Luo looked up at her own photos and still felt very out of place.

The person in the photo, from head to toe, didn't have a single cell that looked like her - evident from the fact that she was standing by the roadside with people coming and going, yet no one recognized her.

"The 'General' model is a newcomer, right?" Fu Luo heard a fashionably dressed young girl say to her companion, "I've been following Robin for a long time and have collected every issue of their new product launch albums, but I've never seen this person before."

"Handsome, quite unique." They whispered next to Fu Luo's ears, then took a couple of photos and walked away, giggling.

"It's not like there's no sense of accomplishment." It was the first time Fu Luo had eavesdropped on others discussing her, feeling a bit embarrassed but also experiencing something completely new. She tried to convince herself with this bit of novelty, "Actually, Uncle Robin is quite amazing. People all over the world collect his product albums. Every time there's something new, it attracts countless comments and can be displayed in the biggest squares..."

She found a place to sit down in the square. The lights shone on her, casting a long silhouette. Fu Luo tried hard to imagine what kind of life she would lead if she left the military.

Maybe she could get by with Uncle Robin, or find a property service center to repair robots, or go study a different major...

However, all of these could only form a rough concept in her mind, with no details. Although she had only lived for a short twenty-some years, her gaze had always been fixed on the distant starry sky. She had never for a day imagined what it would be like to leave space.

"I don't want to leave, but can I?" she silently thought.

Just then, a three- or four-year-old boy, led by his mother, walked past Fu Luo. The little boy wasn't watching the road, one hand desperately grasping his mother's clothes, head raised and on tiptoe, pleading for something. He accidentally tripped over Fu Luo's outstretched leg and fell with a "plop".

Fu Luo was startled. Coming back to her senses, she hurriedly withdrew her leg and reached out to help the little boy up, "Sorry..."

The boy probably fell quite painfully. He looked at her with teary eyes, but he had other pressing matters. Ignoring Fu Luo, he got up and once again tenaciously reached out his little paw to grab his mother's clothes, continuing to plead in a tearful voice, "Mommy, I want to eat ice cream, can I?"

Fu Luo was stunned for a moment.

The mother and son passed by her in a tug-of-war argument. In an instant, Fu Luo understood what Colonel Yang meant by that half-amused, half-exasperated "childish things".

What she had just been thinking turned out to have the same sentence structure as that little thing who couldn't even walk steadily.

Fu Luo sat there in a daze for a moment, then suddenly leaped up and ran back.

She ran all the way back to her room in one breath, closed the door, and sent Ye Wenlin a voice message.

"Senior Brother, I have a very important matter to consult with you now. This time you must be serious and reliable. I want to ask, if a person's transfer order is changed to ground staff before reporting, is there any way to transfer to the regular space force?"

Ye Wenlin didn't reply immediately. Fu Luo knew he might have left the remote satellite signal area again for routine inspections.

She let out a long breath, did a simple wash, and lay on the bed facing up. After a moment, Fu Luo remembered something, sat up and pressed a small button on the bedside. The ceiling immediately turned into a simple indoor planetarium, with a simulated image of the Milky Way appearing above her head, slowly rotating according to the seasons.

Fu Luo closed her eyes under the starry sky.

Giving up or persisting, it was her own choice, completely unrelated to other people's suggestions, permissions, or even obstacles. How could she be so intimidated by the first step in life that she shrank back?
