Chapter 84 - Identity

A few days after the date, the investigation team led by Annihilation sent over the results of their investigation into Jian Jinwen and Yun Jin's identities. After receiving the information, Lian Jun slid his wheelchair over to Shi Jin's side and tapped the headrest of the sofa where Shi Jin was lying down with headphones on, watching a movie on his tablet.

Shi Jin looked up when he felt the tap and saw Lian Jun approaching. He quickly took off his headphones and sat up, asking, "What's up? Do you want some water?"

Lian Jun shook his head and pointed to the laptop on his lap, which was used to receive the investigation results. "The investigation results have arrived. Do you want to take a look?"

Shi Jin was taken aback, and the relaxation on his face slowly faded away. He put down his tablet and nodded. The two sat side by side on the sofa, and Shi Jin placed the laptop on the coffee table before opening the information.

The information was divided into three parts. The first part was the investigation results of Jian Jinwen's background, the second part was the investigation results of Yun Jin's background, and the third part was some miscellaneous information. Shi Jin moved his fingers and clicked on Jian Jinwen's section first.

The information still started with photos. As soon as Shi Jin opened the information, two photos popped up. The people in the photos were a man and a woman, both in their twenties and looking similar in age. The man had a refined appearance, while the woman had a gentle and beautiful appearance. They were both dressed in trendy clothes and looked like they came from well-off families.

Shi Jin was stunned as his gaze swept over the appearance of the two people. He quickly confirmed that they were Jian Jinwen's parents. However, he was puzzled by their attire. People who could afford to dress like this wouldn't abandon their child for financial reasons, would they?

Moreover, Jian Jinwen was healthy when he was abandoned, so it couldn't have been due to his health. If it wasn't because they couldn't afford to raise him or because they couldn't take care of him, then why did these two people abandon Jian Jinwen?

With these doubts in mind, he flipped over the photo and looked at the information on the back. Soon, he understood the reason why these two people abandoned their child. Jian Jinwen's biological father is named Wei Ming, and his biological mother is named Guan Jiajia. The two of them were childhood sweethearts and had a very good relationship, but their parents had a very bad relationship and there was even business competition between the two families. When they were sixteen years old, they couldn't resist the temptation and had Jian Jinwen.

Shi Jin: "..."

Having a child as a minor is indeed more dramatic than one can imagine.

According to the records, due to a lack of sexual knowledge, Guan Jiajia didn't realize she was pregnant until six months later. She was very scared, but also knew that this was not something a child like her could handle, so she went to her parents for help.

After her parents found out about the situation, they went straight to the Wei family's house and beat Wei Ming half to death. The relationship between the two families deteriorated once again. Wei Ming's parents adamantly refused to allow Wei Ming to be with Guan Jiajia and refused to let him apologize. They sent Wei Ming away to another city and made sure Guan Jiajia's parents couldn't find him. They spread rumors that Guan Jiajia was fooling around outside and was pregnant with some thug's child, completely abandoning Wei Ming.

Guan Jiajia's parents were driven mad and spent money to disrupt Wei Ming's family business, taking a big bite out of them before leaving the city.

After all the commotion, Guan Jiajia's baby was already seven months old. Considering that abortion would harm the mother's health, Guan Jiajia's parents ultimately decided to let her give birth to the child. Two months later, Guan Jiajia gave birth to Jian Jinwen. Guan Jiajia's mother stayed behind to take care of her daughter, while Guan Jiajia's father drove to another city with the baby and left him at the doorstep of a welfare institution.

Afterwards, Guan Jiajia took a year off from school to recuperate. In the middle of the second year, she was sent abroad by her parents.

As for Wei Ming, he was sent to a closed boarding school for boys after this incident by his parents. He only gained a little bit of freedom after he was admitted to university.

And with that, the first part of the story comes to an end, and Jian Jinwen's background is fully revealed. Shi Jin looked back at the photo of Wei Ming and Guan Jiajia, and realized that Jian Jinwen didn't particularly resemble either of his parents, but rather inherited the better-looking features from each of them. He remembered that the original owner's mother had a striking resemblance to Jian Jinwen, which led him to an unpleasant speculation - could the original owner's mother be the child of Wei Ming and Guan Jiajia?

Two people who had such a tumultuous relationship in their youth, could they really end up together and have another child? He furrowed his brows, and with a tap of his finger, he opened the second part of the information. As the second part of the information opened, there were no photos popping up like in the first part. Shi Jin's heart sank a little, knowing that he had probably guessed correctly - if there were no new photos, it meant that Yun Jin's birth was not related to anyone else.

The information showed that Yun Jin was also an abandoned baby. She was initially thrown into a trash can in N province, and was discovered by a sanitation worker who reported it to the authorities. She was then sent to an orphanage in N province. Later, that orphanage closed down, and Yun Jin was transferred to an orphanage in a small city, where she grew up and prepared to live independently. It was there that she met Shi Xingrui.

"Wait, she transferred orphanages? And she's going from a medium-sized orphanage in a big city to an unknown small orphanage in a small city? That's so strange. Even if the orphanage is closing down, shouldn't the children be transferred to another orphanage in the same province?"

As Shi Jin thought about it, he carefully examined the information and discovered that Yun Jin was transferred to the orphanage at the age of eight. It was only after entering the new orphanage that she was officially named Yun Jin. Before that, she only had a common name that followed the surname of the previous orphanage director.

"...So Yun Jin was eight years old at the time, which was not long after Shi Xingrui abandoned Li Jiuzheng's mother? He remembered that it was from this time that Shi Xingrui stopped looking for women to have children with and began to focus on his career." Renaming, relocating the orphanage, and suddenly stopping the search for a surrogate to have a child... it all made sense now.

Shi Jin was right in his previous guess - Shi Xingrui had found a perfect substitute, secretly raising her in an orphanage all these years.

Yun Jin was only eight years old at the time, and Shi Xingrui had patiently waited for her to grow up for ten years before revealing himself as a successful man and relentlessly pursuing her. He had charmed her into having his child and even wanted to kidnap her into marriage, trapping her for life.

Shi Xingrui was insane, truly insane. Shi couldn't speak for a while as he tried to digest the information. He rubbed his face vigorously and then turned to the next set of documents with a tense expression. What was the relationship between Yun Jin and Jian Jinwen? Were they half-siblings with the same father but different mothers? Or were they half-siblings with the same mother but different fathers? Perhaps they were distant relatives? Or could it be that they were actually...siblings?

As he quickly flipped through the second set of documents, he reached the end and realized he had no idea how to react. Yun Jin was actually Wei Ming and Guan Jiajia's child, just like Jian Jinwen. However, her birth was even more tragic than his.

She was the product of Wei Ming's forced confinement and abuse of Guan Jiajia. According to records, Guan Jiajia quickly shook off the shadow of being an underage mother after going abroad and grew up to become an outstanding and mature woman. She married a college classmate and settled overseas.

On the other hand, Wei Ming in China was not as lucky as her. After being bitten by the Guan family, the Wei family's business seemed to have been cursed and went downhill for several years. Wei Ming's parents blamed all the business troubles on Wei Ming, believing that if he hadn't provoked Guan Jiajia, their business wouldn't have gone bad.

Under the triple blows of his lover leaving, his parents' verbal abuse, and the strict management of his boarding high school, Wei Ming's psyche gradually twisted, growing into a "weirdo" who appeared normal on the surface but was mentally abnormal. After finishing university, he cut off contact with his family and chose to work in the city where Guan Jiajia's parents lived, living like a pervert near them and monitoring Guan Jiajia's parents in an attempt to find Guan Jiajia.

Guan's parents were completely unaware of this and lived under Wei Ming's surveillance for over twenty years. Fortunately, during these decades, because Guan Jiajia had some unpleasant memories in China, it was always her parents who went abroad to see her, and she herself never returned, so Wei Ming never found her.

The turning point in the story happened when Wei Ming was forty-one years old. That year, Guan Jiajia's mother fell seriously ill and Guan Jiajia was worried sick. Finally, she overcame her reluctance and bought a plane ticket to go back to China to take care of her mother in person.

The incident that happened when she was sixteen years old was already too distant and blurry for her to remember. So when she was stopped by Wei Ming, who had undergone a drastic change in both temperament and appearance, in a small alley on her way back from the hospital to her parents' home, she didn't recognize him at first. Instead, she mistook him for a robber and called the police.

This incident obviously triggered Wei Ming. On Guan Jiajia's next trip back from the hospital to her parents' home, he kidnapped her and took her to a deserted mountain cave, where he locked her up. No one knows what exactly happened to Guan Jiajia during that time. According to the case records, when she finally found a chance to escape from the mountain, a year had already passed and Wei Ming was dead, lying on that desolate hill.

Guan Jiajia avoided talking about what happened during that year. When doctors examined her, they discovered that she had given birth to a child recently. When asked about the child's whereabouts, she simply shook her head and remained silent, suffering from severe psychological trauma.

Later, her husband took her abroad under the guise of seeking medical treatment. Guan Jiajia's parents followed suit. With no credible witnesses or evidence, the case was eventually closed with the conclusion that Guan Jiajia acted in self-defense, resulting in Wei Ming's death.

As for the child that no one had ever seen, the information on it was vague. The police suspected that the child was taken away by Wei Ming after birth, but they could not find any clues as to where Wei Ming took the child.

Even the investigation team led by Annihilation had a hard time when they reached this point. However, they eventually discovered that Wei Ming had taken the child, Yun Jin, and given him to his own parents, based on the information provided by Shi Jin, which suggested that Yun Jin might be related to Jian Jinwen, his biological parents.

It seemed that Wei Ming's parents had noticed something was not right with Wei Ming and the suspicious child, so they secretly got rid of the child after Wei Ming left. When the police came to investigate later, they pretended to have cut ties with Wei Ming for many years and claimed to know nothing about the child. With that, the second part of the information came to an end. Shi Jin had confirmed that Jian Jinwen was Yun Jin's biological sibling, and the original owner should have called Jian Jinwen "uncle".

Shi Jin put down his tablet, feeling incredibly conflicted. He never expected Jian Jinwen and Yun Jin to have such a melodramatic backstory. Even TV dramas wouldn't dare to write something like this.

"Would you like some water?" Lian Jun asked at the right moment.

Shi Jin glanced at him and shook his head. He let out a sigh, wanting to say something but then decided against it. He adjusted his emotions and continued to open the last part of the scattered information.

The information in this section is quite diverse. It includes information about the charity organization that supported Jian Jinwen, information about Xu Chuan, and even some investigations into the two orphanages where Yun Jin lived before and after. In short, the investigation team has checked everything that Shi Jin wanted to know or might want to know.

Shi Jin briefly flipped through the information and found that the charity organization that supported Jian Jinwen did indeed have some connection with Shi Xingrui, as he had suspected. Even the person who helped Jian Jinwen apply for funding, whom Jian Chenghua mentioned, was arranged by Shi Xingrui with money.

Moreover, the sanatorium where Jian Jinwen lived later could also be considered as Shi Xingrui's industry. Xu Chuan had long become Shi Xingrui's lawyer and had been working for him for a long time. Jian Chenghua had thought that if Jian Jinwen was transferred to a sanatorium, Shi Xingrui would not be able to find him.

This was a big mistake. That sanatorium was actually the "golden house" that Shi Xingrui had specially opened for Jian Jinwen. As long as Jian Jinwen lived there, Shi Xingrui could know his every move.

And unsurprisingly, the small orphanage where Yun Jin lived in the later stages of her life was also funded by Shi Xingrui. Both siblings were unknowingly sent to the "golden house".

It was truly a perverse desire for control.

Shi Jin frowned deeply, suppressing the urge to curse Shi Xingrui, and turned to the last page of the information. At the end of the investigation report, the investigators pointed out something very surprising - Xu Jie and Xu Chuan were actually relatives, although their relationship was distant and their elders no longer communicated. But they were indeed relatives.

Upon seeing this, Shi Jin was stunned for a moment, then greatly shocked. Xu Chuan and Xu Jie were actually relatives? Then, does Shi Xingrui know about this?

Xu Chuan was Shi Xingrui's confidant, and even participated in Shi Xingrui's secret plan to rescue Jian Jinwen. If Xu Chuan and Xu Jie were relatives, and even had contact with each other, wouldn't Xu Jie be able to know everything Shi Xingrui did? Could it be that Xu Jie learned about Shi Xingrui through Xu Chuan, and then entered the Ruihang company?

Moreover, he remembered that Xu Chuan had been bought by Xu Tianhua before. Xu Tianhua was the vice chairman of Ruihang and a rival of Shi Weichong in terms of interests and taking over Ruihang. Xu Jie was Shi Weichong's mother...

His heart sank suddenly as he thought of a possibility - what if Xu Chuan was not really bought by Xu Tianhua, but was instructed by Xu Jie to pretend to join Xu Tianhua and then take the opportunity to pull Xu Tianhua back, helping Shi Weichong's side, and securing the position of Ruihang's president?

If that was the case, then when Xu Chuan was joining Xu Tianhua, was the money spent on placing an order with the Werewolf group to kidnap the original owner also done under Xu Jie's instruction? Xu Tianhua actually had no idea and was just being framed? He remembered during the interrogation, Xu Tianhua had never admitted to buying someone to hurt others. In the end, everyone was certain that he was the mastermind behind it all because the deposit paid to the hitman was transferred from Xu Tianhua's secret account, which was controlled by Xu Chuan.

But looking back now, as a famous lawyer for many years, it would have been easy for Xu Chuan to use Xu Tianhua's secret account for his own purposes after joining forces with him.

Seeing that Lian Jun's expression was getting worse, he couldn't help but touch him and ask, "What's wrong?"

As Shi Jin snapped out of his various wild speculations, he spoke with a dry throat, "I suspect... Xu Chuan and Xu Jie have been colluding all along. The mastermind behind Xu Chuan's hiring of the Werewolf hitman may not have been Xu Tianhua, but Xu Jie. Do you remember the demands Xu Chuan made when he instructed the hitman to kidnap me? Disfigurement, finger amputation, torture until death - all these demands reek of personal grudges and hatred. But there was no deep-seated enmity between Xu Tianhua and me. If he only wanted to kidnap me for his own benefit, the most efficient way would be to have the hitman kill me directly after the kidnapping. After all, the longer the situation dragged on, the more unpredictable it became. But they didn't... why did I not notice this demand for torture until now?"

When Lian Jun heard this, his expression turned cold, but he quickly suppressed it and patted his back to reassure him, saying, "I have been keeping an eye on Xu Jie. If there is any unusual behavior, my people will notify me immediately. Don't worry."

"I'm not afraid of her, I just want to clarify some things." Shi Jin interrupted, thinking back to his strange encounter with Xu Chuan, his growing doubts about Xu Chuan's behavior, and couldn't help but turn his head to look at Lian Jun, saying seriously, "I want to see Xu Chuan as soon as possible."

Although Lian Jun was a little reluctant, he still nodded and said, "Okay, I'll arrange it."

......

Lian Jun's efficiency was very fast. That afternoon, he had already arranged Shi Jin's trip to M province. "I'll have Number Two and Number Five accompany you," said Lian Jun as he personally helped Shi Jin pack his luggage. "The temperature in M Province is higher than in B City, so be careful not to get heatstroke when you get there."

Shi Jin snapped out of his thoughts about the plot and saw Lian Jun's gentle and caring demeanor. He couldn't help but lean in and hug him from behind, saying, "I'll try to come back as soon as possible. You have to eat well these few days."

"I know," Lian Jun put down the clothes in his hand and turned to look at him. He couldn't help but ask, "Don't you want to leave?"

"Of course not," Shi Jin replied, not hiding his emotions at all. He relaxed his body and hung onto Lian Jun, saying, "We just started dating, it should be our honeymoon period..."

Lian Jun reached out and turned his face towards him, kissing him directly. After cuddling for a while, Lian Jun finally regained his composure and helped Shi Jin pack his luggage. He personally escorted him out of the club and said, "If you have any problems, call me."

Shi Jin leaned against the car window and watched Lian Jun as he nodded in response. Then he urged, "Go inside quickly. It's too sunny outside, don't stay in the sun for too long."

Lian Jun rolled his wheelchair back a bit, into the shade by the door, and stopped. He made it clear that he wanted to watch Shi Jin leave with his own eyes.

Shi Jin sighed inwardly, waved goodbye to Lian Jun, and sat up straight to close the car window. He said to Number Five, who was driving, "Let's go."

The car started and slowly drove away from the clubhouse. Lian Jun watched the vehicle disappear into the distance until it was no longer in sight. His expression turned cold as he turned to Number One beside him and ordered, "Keep an eye on Xu Jie and thoroughly investigate her social connections. Don't let any suspicious individuals slip through."

Number One nodded in response and pushed him back into the clubhouse.

...

On the way to the airport, Shi Jin Qu took out his tablet. Instead of playing mahjong, he opened an encrypted document and pulled up all the investigation materials. He shrank them down and displayed them side by side on the screen.

Number Two glanced at his screen and saw that it was filled with dense text. He quickly looked away and said, "What are you doing? Are you trying to torture your eyes? The police academy has vision requirements, don't ruin your eyesight."

"I won't do anything stupid," Shi Jin said as he pointed to one of the documents and enlarged a section of text, taking out a set of paper and pens from his bag.

Number Two raised an eyebrow and asked, "What are you doing, homework?"

"No, I'm organizing the timeline," Shi Jin replied, burying his head and jotting down the time when Xu Jie and Shi Xingrui met in his notebook.

Seeing him write down Shi Xingrui's name in his notebook, Number Two quickly closed his mouth, extinguishing his teasing thoughts. He moved to the side and leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes to rest.

Shi Jin's attention was completely focused on the documents in front of him, and he didn't even notice Number Two's thoughtfulness. After discovering a possible connection between Xu Chuan and Xu Jie, he carefully reviewed the original plot and realized that if he attributed the identity of the mastermind behind the scenes to Xu Jie, all the plot points that the original owner had experienced and the several inexplicable fluctuations in the progress bar could be reasonably explained.

Assuming that Xu Chuan and Xu Jie really had colluded, in order to completely pry open Xu Chuan's mouth this time, he must be fully prepared, grasp all the details that he can, and catch Xu Chuan off guard.
