"Why did Old Ding ask you to drive, drive the car?" Chu Yi asked while eating, "You two were not on good terms, right?"
"He was the deputy captain!" Dad scoffed, "The deputy captain's words carry weight! What could I do, he said to take him to see someone named Yan, asked me to give him a ride along the way, could I say no! If I said no, he could make me work a month without any breaks."
Dad couldn't hold his liquor well, and this wine was strong. After two cups, his voice had raised quite a bit.
"What business could he have with Uncle...Mr. Yan." Chu Yi asked in as casual a tone as possible.
"Who knows! If I knew he was going to stab Mr. Yan, I wouldn't have possibly taken him there even if you beat me to death!" dad said, "And he even asked me to call out to Mr. Yan, Old Ding is simply inhuman."
Chu Yi felt his heart was beating very hard, he drank some wine trying to calm it down, but instead it beat even harder, he had to get up and pour himself a cup of water.
"You drink wine with water?" dad laughed, "No good, son."
Chu Yi pulled his mouth into something like a smile, he almost didn't hear what his dad said, his mind filled with the sentence "he was going to stab Mr. Yan".
Old Ding went to make trouble for Uncle Yan!
"Then, then, did he stab?" Chu Yi asked.
"Seeing you today, I felt your stutter improved," dad poured him more wine, "Now you got scared and your stutter got worse again."
"No." Chu Yi said.
"Old Ding brought a knife, now that I think about it, it scares me, if I hadn't listened to him, would he have stabbed me first?" Dad frowned and sighed.
"You didn't try to stop him?" Chu Yi looked at him.
"How would I dare!" Dad answered without thinking, then paused and added, "I wouldn't have been able to stop him anyway, I just called out to Mr. Yan, then wanted to leave, Old Ding got off the car and rushed over."
"What happened next?" Chu Yi asked, pressing down the nervousness inside.
"What else could happen," Dad lightly tapped the table, "They started fighting! I didn't expect Mr. Yan to be quite a good fighter, after just two moves Old Ding was beaten down, he took out the knife from his pants and stabbed...so sinister."
When Chu Yi heard that Uncle Yan was stabbed by Old Ding's knife, he suddenly felt like he couldn't even breathe.
He didn't say anything more.
But Dad was probably drunk enough to keep talking without prompts from him.
Basically Old Ding took out a knife and stabbed Uncle Yan, two or three times, Dad was too nervous to remember clearly. Then Uncle Yan grabbed the knife from Old Ding's hand and also stabbed Old Ding once.
Then there was blood, blood everywhere, very scary, it frightened Dad so much his legs went soft and he couldn't stand leaning against the wall...
Then Old Ding ran towards the river and Uncle Yan ran in the other direction.
In the end, passerby Chu Jianxin was so scared that not only did he not dare to stop them, he didn't even report to the police, didn't dare to go home, didn't even make a phone call, and started fleeing, until he was finally caught by the police.
Later Dad said a lot more, but because he was drunk, it was just repetitive descriptions of the scene at the time.
They rushed at each other and started fighting...knocked down in two moves...took out a knife and stabbed...the knife was grabbed and he was stabbed back...ran away...scared...ran...
Chu Yi didn't want to keep listening, but couldn't get the already drunk Dad to stop. He had no choice but to listen over and over again, scenes from back then kept repeating in his mind.
Until Dad collapsed sleeping on the table, mumbling then slowly quieting down, Chu Yi leaned back on his chair, tilted his head back, and let out a long breath.
- I'm on the plane, heading straight to your place, don't come to pick me up.
Yan Hang looked at the message from Chu Yi and replied with a smiling emoji.
- Okay.
In their chat window, if you scrolled up a bit, you'd see the longest messages Chu Yi had ever sent.
It was from last night, detailing Chu Jianxin's description of the events at the scene.
These details, if Chu Yi had to speak them out loud, would probably be too difficult, so he chose to send them via messages.
And reading these details wasn't just hard to say out loud, it was difficult for Yan Hang to read as well.
Chu Yi used the simplest descriptions possible, but Yan Hang knew his dad too well. Just by reading it, he could imagine what the scene had looked like.
If there hadn’t been a knife, Old Ding definitely wouldn’t have been a match for his dad. And even after knocking him down, his dad clearly hadn’t intended to kill him; otherwise, Old Ding wouldn’t have had the chance to grab the knife.
"So, what you're saying is," Cui Yi said, "your dad must have found Old Ding first and was pretty sure he was the guy he was looking for, but he didn’t report it to the police immediately…"
"He went to see Old Ding," Yan Hang said. "Such an obvious move to alert the enemy; he was probably trying to lure someone else out."
"Maybe, but Old Ding made the first move. The old fox probably didn’t expect Old Ding to lose his cool so quickly," Cui Yi sighed. "But that’s not the most important thing now. The key is to find someone to figure out what kind of sentence your dad would face if he got caught."
"It doesn’t matter to me anymore," Yan Hang said.
"Then don’t worry about it," Cui Yi said. "I'll handle it."
"What’s your story with him?" Yan Hang asked. "Why are you helping him so much?"
"Then I'll just give up on him," Cui Yi said. "Not my problem anymore."
Yan Hang burst out laughing.
"I'm mostly free these days," Cui Yi said, "You young people are too busy. Remember to chat more with Dr. Luo recently and don't think about anything else for now."
"Mm," Yan Hang murmured in agreement.
After getting off work that evening, Yan Hang didn't take the bus home and instead directly called a taxi back.
He had been taking the bus or riding his bike to commute for a quite a while now, probably influenced by the stingy Chu Yi to be frugal. Whenever he felt like taking a taxi, he would feel deep remorse.
Today he decided to indulge in guilt anyway. He wanted to get home quicker.
On the way, he thought about buying some food to take back, as Chu Yi definitely wouldn't have eaten dinner. Cooking after getting home would take more time, so buying something to eat first would tide things over.
But in the end, he only bought a box of ice cream at the small supermarket downstairs, which he took back home holding.
Right after getting out of the elevator and about to take out his keys to open the door, it opened, with Chu Yi smiling while leaning against the side.
"You saw me from the window just now?" Yan Hang asked.
"Mm," Chu Yi nodded, "I was sitting, sitting by the window, there looking, looking."
Yan Hang opened his arms and Chu Yi went over to hug him tightly.
"The puppy's tired," Yan Hang said, patting his back, "The puppy making a round trip must be exhausted without proper sleep, sitting by the window wagging his tail waiting for me to come back..."
"I don't, don't wag my tail while waiting," Chu Yi said. "Only wag after, after seeing someone."
"Is it wagging now?" Yan Hang reached down to touch by his tailbone. "Let me feel."
"Don't randomly touch," Chu Yi said.
"What's wrong with touching you," Yan Hang slapped his butt, "Quite cocky huh."
"That's right, cocky," Chu Yi said.
"Yes indeed," Yan Hang kissed his nose, "Especially these two days, cocky as hell."
Chu Yi smiled.
"I'll make something to eat," Yan Hang let go of him and handed over the ice cream, "Eat this first...to tide you over."
"This?" Chu Yi looked at him.
"Mm," Yan Hang took off his coat and went into the kitchen, opening the fridge, "It'll take me some time to cook. Aren't you hungry?"
"Who's, eats ice, ice cream when hungry?" Chu Yi looked at the box in shock.
"There's no rule you can only eat ice cream in summer," Yan Hang took out ingredients from the fridge and placed them on the counter one by one.
"Eating ice, ice cream when hungry!" Chu Yi raised his voice.
"What else if not?" Yan Hang turned his head looking at him. "Eat me?"
"Okay," Without thinking, Chu Yi nodded.
