"We said 5 pm," Yan Hang looked at the time, "Should be soon."
"Then I'll notify the back kitchen about timing," Zhang Chen nodded, "You don't need to worry about these, just go make food later."
"Okay." Yan Hang smiled.
"Feels pretty awesome right," Zhang Chen smiled watching him, "Always thinking about going to the back kitchen, today you got your wish."
"My ass," Yan Hang said, "Just making one dish and one bowl of noodles, that's not nearly enough for me to showcase my skills."
"Not bad! If I wanted to go to the back kitchen and make a dish, do you think they'd let me go?" Zhang Chen said.
"Are you making fried eggs?" Yan Hang laughed.
"You look down on me? At least it should be an omelette," Zhang Chen said.
Yan Hang's phone rang in his pocket. He took it out and saw it was Cui Yi's number: "I'll take this call."
"Okay," Zhang Chen replied.
Yan Hang went to the hallway and answered the phone.
Cui Yi only calls if it's important business, not to wish a happy early birthday, Yan Hang thought. Ever since he talked to the police about Chu Yi's dad, he had felt somewhat unsettled, hard to describe the feeling.
"What's up? Still working?" Cui Yi asked.
"What else would I be doing?" Yan Hang laughed. "What is it?"
"Did Chu Yi arrive with his classmates yet?" Cui Yi asked again.
"Still have a bit, we set to meet at 5," Yan Hang said. "I'm going to the kitchen to cook something."
"You really can't stay away from the kitchen huh," Cui Yi laughed. "Alright, bring me back some late night snacks."
"What would you like?" Yan Hang asked.
"Anything you guys eat, I just want a little something in my stomach," Cui Yi said.
"Okay," Yan Hang waited for Cui Yi to get to the point.
But Cui Yi just said "I'll hang up now."
"Old Cui," Yan Hang said, "that's not like you at all."
"You're right," Cui Yi sighed. "Hanging up abruptly is more my style."
"Did you get some news?" Yan Hang asked.
"I was going to just tell you directly, but you seemed to be in a good mood..." Cui Yi said. "So I decided not to."
"If you say it like that my mood is definitely not going to stay the same," Yan Hang sighed. "It's nothing, it's been so long already, used to it. Just tell me."
"Chu Jianxin has been captured and turned himself in," Cui Yi said.
"Chu Jianxin?" It took Yan Hang at least 2 seconds to react. That's Chu Yi's dad. "When?"
"Yesterday," Cui Yi said. "The family should have been notified already. Did Chu Yi not mention it to you?"
"No," Yan Hang said.
"Well the details aren't clear yet anyway, just know he's been caught. His family probably didn't tell him," Cui Yi said. "You..."
"I can't tell him either," Yan Hang said. "It's his birthday today."
"Then find an appropriate time," Cui Yi said.
"Okay," Yan Hang hung up and went downstairs for a smoke.
The few trash bins outside the employee passage, if they could talk, were probably old friends with Yan Hang already.
He came to report in every day, as frequent as the cleaning lady.
Yan Hang lit a cigarette and took a few puffs before calming down.
The person surnamed Chu, no, Chu someone something has turned himself in.
Chu Yi's dad is called Chu Jianxin.
Yan Hang realized just now he never thought to find out, or rather deliberately did not try to find out.
Some details, even if you know, are useless, but will draw you deeper into something.
Like once you know Chu Yi's dad is called Chu Jianxin, because of this name, his relation to this matter immediately becomes closer.
Yan Hang did not like this feeling much.
He looked at the cigarette smoke in front of him, without wind it would stay suspended in the air for a long time, only dispersing after he blew on it.
The day this person was captured really was picked too accurately.
Even if he told Chu Yi tomorrow, it would not be very suitable, earlier or later would have been better.
Maybe the time he himself talked to the police wasn't chosen right.
Yan Hang frowned.
- We'll be there soon!
Yan Hang had just put the sweet potato bread in the oven to bake when Chu Yi sent a message.
He smiled, looking at the exclamation mark, he could imagine Chu Yi's expression. After putting the bread in the oven, he went to the side to reply to Chu Yi.
- Sounds good birthday boy
Yan Hang went back to the restaurant and saw Zhang Chen had already brought Chu Yi and his dorm mates to the reserved table. In front of each person was a round chocolate ball, with a birthday sticker on it decorated with a puppy pattern.
The restaurant had them made according to zodiac animals, Yan Hang picked the one that matched Chu Yi's image the most, a prick eared puppy.
"Happy birthday," Yan Hang walked over to the table with a smile.
"Happy," Chu Yi looked at him smiling.
"I'll bring over some appetizers first," Yan Hang put his hand on Chu Yi's shoulder and gave it a little squeeze.
"We'll go with whatever Brother Hang says," Hu Biao rubbed his hands. "I've been hungry since noon."
Yan Hang smiled and walked away, flicking Chu Yi on the head as he left.
Chu Yi smiled and touched his head.
"I've iced the birthday cake they brought," Zhang Chen said. "I'll bring it over later."
"Will you push it over while singing happy birthday?" Yan Hang joked.
"For others I would just play the music, but your friend..." Zhang Chen waved his hand. "I'll dance over with it if needed."
Yan Hang laughed: "Thanks."
After letting the kitchen know to send appetizers, Yan Hang went back. He checked on the sweet potato bread, it was his first time making this bread, he didn't time the staggered baking so had to keep an eye on it.
Seeing the bread turn golden brown in the oven, he felt it looked pretty good, smiling like Chu Yi.
But not like the Chu Yi today.
