The Plough

The Plough

Chapter 163 - Chapter 162

There was no need to wait for Xiao Yue to come knocking on the door.

Early in the morning, the Yue family received a phone call from her.

At that moment, Yue Dingtang's face changed drastically after answering the call. He hesitated for a moment before going upstairs to wake up Ling Shu.

Ling Shu poked his fuzzy head out of the covers, looking sleepy and disoriented.

Since returning from the northeast, he had been prone to sleeping a lot, perhaps due to the cold weather.

Yue Dingtang was worried and took him to see a doctor, but after a thorough examination, nothing was found except for some old injuries that might cause problems as he aged.

The doctor advised him to rest and take care of himself, and not to assume he would always be young.

After that, Yue Dingtang let Ling Shu sleep as much as he wanted, while the old housekeeper Zhou searched for remedies to help him recover.

Despite feeling a bit sleepy, Ling Shu was otherwise perfectly fine. He ate and slept as usual, and his body was in great shape.

"What's the matter? You look like you've seen a ghost," Ling Shu yawned.

"Is it good news or bad news? If it's bad news, don't tell me yet. I haven't even had breakfast, and I won't be able to eat anything if I hear bad news," he continued.

Yue Dingtang nodded. "Alright, we'll wait until after breakfast."

Ling Shu put his hand down. "So, it really is bad news?"

Yue Dingtang said nothing and patiently waited for Ling Shu to finish washing up and eating.

The more Yue Dingtang remained silent, the more curious Ling Shu became.

Before breakfast even arrived, he couldn't help but ask, "What's going on?"

"Focus on eating," Yue Dingtang replied, not even looking up from his newspaper.

The bad news must be related to recent events if it could affect Ling Shu's appetite. Chewing on a fried dough stick and sipping soy milk, Ling Shu went over the situation in his mind and guessed about 70-80% of what had happened.

Setting down his bowl, Yue Dingtang had yet to speak when Ling Shu raised his hand. "Don't tell me, let me guess. Is it related to the Fifth Young Master Wu?"

"Not bad," Yue Dingtang replied.

"If the bad news could affect my appetite, then the case must have taken a turn for the worse. The clues have been lost, someone has died. Who died? Fifth Young Master Wu or Miss Feng?" Ling Shu asked.

Yue Dingtang felt that Ling Shu was indeed suited for this line of work. Ling Shu was always meticulous in his attention to every detail and never missed a thing.

"Fifth Young Master Wu has indeed disappeared," Yue Dingtang paused, "but that's not the only bad news."

Ling Shu's heart skipped a beat and he couldn't help but ask, "Could it be that Miss Feng also had an accident?"

Yue Dingtang replied, "Feng Zhenzhu is dead."

Ling Shu thought to himself, luckily he had just finished eating, otherwise he wouldn't be able to swallow a single bite.

Feng Zhenzhu had died, by hanging herself.

In the morning, when the servants knocked on the door, there was no response.

They thought their young miss was just sleeping in, so they didn't knock again. By noon, they felt that something was wrong and called the steward to find the key to open the door.

They found that the door was locked from the inside and they couldn't get in. They had to pry the door open while climbing through the second-floor window from outside.

The one climbing through the window was the Feng family's gardener, who was agile and quickly climbed onto Feng Zhenzhu's window sill with a ladder in just a few moves.

The window was not closed, just slightly ajar. The gardener was about to jump in through the window when suddenly, he let out a loud scream and fell off the ladder, breaking his leg.

Everyone was startled when they saw him trembling with fear and pain on his face.

He stuttered and stammered, saying that he had seen Miss Feng hanging by the bed. The Feng family was terrified and quickly pried open the door.

Sure enough, they saw Feng Zhenzhu's body swaying in front of the window, wearing a nightgown and barefoot. When they took her down from the rope, she was already cold and lifeless.

The Feng family was in chaos!

When Ling Shu and Yue Dingtang rushed over, Miss Feng was still lying on her own bed. Not only did Ling Yue and the others come, but also many people from the police station and patrol room.

People came and went, making the Feng family's house crowded. Minister Feng and his eldest son had gone to Nanjing, leaving only Mrs. Feng and Second Young Master Feng.

The second son was unreliable, causing Mrs. Feng to panic and call Minister Feng to report the death. She cried and begged him to come back immediately.

Then she called the Wu family to ask about the Fifth Young Master Wu, only to find out that the Fifth Young Master Wu was missing too.

The Wu family rushed over with worried expressions, no less anxious than the Feng family.

No one expected that a perfect match between their children would lead to so many troubles.

"When did Miss Feng enter the room? Did anyone come in or out during that time? Did any guests visit the Feng family? Did the Fifth Young Master Wu come over?"

After examining the body, Ling Shu and Yue Dingtang went downstairs to question the Feng family's maid.

The maid had already been asked the same questions many times that morning, but she dared not show impatience and had to answer them over and over again.

"Miss Feng returned to her room around 8:30 last night and didn't leave the house since then. At most, she just walked around the garden. When I knocked on her door at 11 pm to ask if she wanted supper, she declined. And this morning at 7 o'clock, there was no response when I knocked on her door. Since Miss San returned to her room last night, no visitors came to see her, and there were no phone calls!"

Yue Dingtang knew what Ling Shu was thinking.

They had dealt with a murder case in a sealed room before, and the case of Yuan Manor was also a similar one. Although Du Yunning seemed to have died at home with no trace of the killer, there were loopholes in the Yuan family, and Du Yunning knew the killer.

Now, it's hard to say that the Feng family is not in the same situation. As the forensic doctor came down from upstairs, he removed his mask and gloves, and everyone looked at him expectantly.

"Based on preliminary findings, Miss Feng's death was a suicide. There were no signs of external force or struggle at the scene. Her actions were resolute. If anyone still has doubts, I suggest preserving the scene and taking the deceased to the police station for further examination."

Ling Shu stepped forward and asked, "Did you say that all her actions were resolute?"

The forensic doctor nodded, "Indeed, as the saying goes, even ants struggle to survive, let alone humans who have the ability to reason. When faced with death, they will surely regret their decision. For example, I have seen someone hang themselves, kicking the chair away with the rope already around their neck. They regretted it and desperately tried to grab the rope with their hands, but couldn't find a foothold and ended up strangling themselves. In such cases, there would be marks on the neck and rope, and the force would be so great that their nails might even break. However, Miss Feng's body is clean and there are no signs of struggle or regret in her bed or bathroom. This indicates that she had made up her mind to die and did not resist or regret it."

Everyone looked at each other in silence, pondering the concept of a determined will to die.

Feng Zhenzhu was born into wealth and had a worry-free life.

Besides the death of her fiancé Fourth Young Master Wu, she had not experienced any hardships in her life. Even after his passing, she got along well with the Fifth Young Master Wu and he did not blame or resent her for her disappearance.

Instead, he prepared to hold their wedding as planned and welcome her into his life. With a new life ahead of her, why did Feng Zhenzhu choose to commit suicide?

Could it be that she experienced something outside that caused her inner pain that could not be resolved, leading her to take her own life?

"May I ask, Mrs. Wu, when did the Fifth Young Master Wu disappear?"

Both families were present, and there was no need for the police to run back and forth. Due to the backgrounds of the Wu and Feng family, a deputy bureau chief came today, whom Yue Dingtang and Ling Shu also knew.

They didn't rush to ask questions and instead listened to the deputy bureau chief's inquiry.

"Yesterday evening, he didn't come back. I thought he went out to play somewhere and didn't ask too much. It wasn't until this morning that I found out he didn't return all night and didn't even bring his secretary. We sent people out to look for him, but couldn't find him anywhere!"

Mrs. Wu was so anxious that her eyes turned red.

"This child occasionally doesn't spend the night at home, but he has never disappeared without a word. Even if he goes out, he would bring his secretary or tell his secretary his whereabouts. He is very well-behaved, except for this time, this time..."

The deputy bureau chief comforted her, "Mrs. Wu, don't worry. Maybe the fifth young master just forgot to send someone back home with a message. I will send people to look for him again."

Mrs. Feng suddenly said, "I remember now! Yesterday at noon, Wu Fei called to look for Zhenzhu. After she answered the phone, Zhenzhu's face didn't look good and she barely ate dinner. Did he say something to her?"

Mrs. Wu was taken aback and her face became even more unpleasant.

"What could he say? Do you think my son had something to do with Zhenzhu's death? I also want to know what happened to Zhenzhu during the time she was missing. Why did she come back like a different person? If we didn't keep our agreement, who would have married her now?! Do you really think no one knows what happened to her outside?!"

It is said that Mrs. Wu was also a fierce person when she was young, and Ling Shu witnessed it today.

As soon as these words were spoken, Mrs. Feng immediately became angry. "What do you mean, 'what's wrong'? Explain it clearly to me! Our Feng family has a good reputation, and our daughter is pure and innocent. She just went out to play for a few days, and nothing happened! When she came back, everything was fine. Why did she suddenly become so upset after seeing Wu Fei? Is it because Wu Fei doesn't want to marry into our family and is afraid of being criticized for breaking off the engagement, so he secretly forced her to do something?!"

Mrs. Wu sneered, "A good reputation? It's amazing that you can say such things! Everyone knows that your husband, Old Feng, is the head of the Ministry of Tobacco Control, but secretly colludes with warlords to smuggle and sell tobacco for profit. Your aunt was kidnapped before because of a dispute over profits. Now it's your daughter's turn. Who knows if you have caused this trouble? Do you think everyone is blind and deaf and knows nothing?!"

Ling Shu and Yue Dingtang looked at each other in disbelief. They never expected Mrs. Wu to reveal this little-known secret in public. Even though it may not be a secret in certain circles, at this moment, it was like tearing off the other party's face and stomping on it mercilessly.

As the Feng family's faces grew increasingly unpleasant, the deputy director and others quickly shifted their gaze elsewhere, pretending to be deaf.

Mrs. Wu's mouth was like a machine gun, once it started, it couldn't stop.

"In my opinion, you should reflect on your actions. Is Feng Zhenzhu's current situation a result of the sins your family has committed as parents? How many immoral things has the Feng family done behind closed doors? You know very well. If you want to blame my son for your own mistakes, forget it! I even suspect that your daughter has bewitched my son with some kind of evil words. If I had known that when my fourth son died, I wouldn't have let my husband arrange for this marriage. Your daughter is a jinx, a harbinger of bad luck for anyone who comes into contact with her!"

"Shut up!"

Smack!

Mrs. Feng slapped Mrs. Wu in the face without warning, leaving her dazed.

Mr. Wu did not follow them, only Mrs. Wu and two servants.

They were all stunned and couldn't believe that these noble ladies would resort to violence.

Mrs. Wu had never experienced such humiliation before.

She immediately let out a loud scream and pounced on Mrs. Feng, knocking her to the ground. She then mounted her and began slapping her while pulling her hair.

Mrs. Feng screamed and fought back, punching and kicking, and even managed to mess up Mrs. Wu's hair.

The two high-class ladies had turned into shrews in the blink of an eye.

Everyone was stunned and it took a few seconds for them to react and pull the two women apart.

"Stop it, stop it!" they shouted.

"What's going on? Let's talk it out!"

"How dare you hit my mother!"

As if things weren't chaotic enough, Mr. Feng's son joined in and grabbed Mrs. Wu by the hair, dragging her away. The servants from the Wu household couldn't just stand by and watch, so they stepped in to help and even landed a few punches on Mr. Feng's son.

It was truly a comical farce. As Ling Shu thought about Miss Feng still lying upstairs, her body not yet cold, the two families downstairs had already started fighting, and he couldn't help but sigh.

Suddenly, his arm was pulled back by Yue Dingtang, who took a few steps back to avoid being caught up in the crowd.

"What do you think we should do about this?" Ling Shu asked in a low voice.

"It looks like this failed marriage has turned into a feud," Yue Dingtang shook his head.

The deputy director was at a loss, using all his strength to try and stop the fight.

"Ladies, please calm down! The truth of the matter is still unclear. Our priority is to find the Fifth Young Master Wu and investigate the true cause of Miss Feng's death. Please be patient, we will do our best! If you don't mind, Mrs. Feng and Second Young Master, we would like to take Miss Feng's body back for further investigation."

Mrs. Feng was panting with disheveled hair, "No way! How can my daughter be allowed to be abused by anyone?"

The deputy director looked embarrassed, "Then..."

In fact, he didn't want to deal with this tricky case. The Feng family didn't want him to get involved, and he was happy about it.

Feng Er said, "My sister definitely can't have been dissected, but you guys must find out who did it. Who knows if he's feeling guilty and ran away!"

Mrs. Wu exclaimed sharply, "You're slandering us! Your Feng family doesn't have a single good person! When Feng Zhenzhu first went missing, if I hadn't discovered it early, you would have wanted to cover it up, afraid of ruining your reputation! If it weren't for our righteousness, how could I let my son marry a jinx, a shameless woman who sleeps around and brings trouble to my son!"

Mrs. Feng said, "What did you say?"

As the two women were about to start fighting again, the crowd quickly held them back, while the deputy director stepped in to mediate.

"Now, now, ladies, let's not argue. Since Mrs. Feng is unwilling to hand over Miss Feng to us, please accept our condolences. As for the crime scene, which is Miss Feng's room, please do not disturb it. I will leave two people here to continue collecting evidence, okay?"

Second Young Master Feng was getting impatient. "She is dead now. What good will more evidence do to bring my sister back to life? We need to find the Fifth Young Master Wu as soon as possible!"

The deputy director asked, "So, are you suggesting that we close the case as a suicide by Miss Feng?"

Feng Er replied, "What suicide? Didn't you hear my mother say that the Fifth Young Master Wu forced her to death? Rumors are dangerous. How could my sister, who was perfectly fine, commit suicide?"

The situation was getting chaotic again, so Ling Shu quickly pulled Yue Dingtang away from the messy Feng family.

Walking briskly out of the gate, they left the noise behind and both let out a sigh of relief, exchanging a bitter smile as they looked at each other.

Who would have thought that Miss Feng would suddenly commit suicide and the Fifth Young Master Wu would disappear at the same time?

The Fifth Young Master Wu may not be the murderer, but his disappearance is definitely related to Miss Feng's death in some way.

In fact, could Miss Feng's previous disappearance and the Fifth Young Master Wu's current disappearance be the work of the same group of people?

All of this was so confusing that it left them with no leads to follow.
