Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

There were only five people in the President's Office, but its status was pivotal. To make an analogy, it was like the Grand Council of the Qing Dynasty, connecting all the various government offices both inside and outside the "imperial court."

So, the weekly regular meetings were usually held together with other departments to listen to reports, hand over tasks, compile summaries, and report directly to the top.

For a newcomer like Bo He, let alone speaking freely, having been at the job for just a week, she didn't even have anything to report. All she had to do was lower her head and take notes.

Qin Chuan was also there.

In the eyes of his subordinates, Boss Qin was stern and serious most of the time. The rare occasions he revealed a brilliant smile were probably when he was signing a contract for a large sum of money.

But none of that mattered; his good looks were enough to cover up these shortcomings. Especially since this boss was slightly nearsighted, when he put on his thin-rimmed glasses to read documents during meetings, his sharp and cold demeanor was imperceptibly softened.

Nowadays, while there was certainly no lack of quick-witted and ambitious young women, most people simply treated Boss Qin as a pleasing sight to alleviate the boredom of meetings.

Bo He wasn't even in the mood to admire the handsome man.

Her hands tapped swiftly and lightly on her laptop keyboard. Besides recording the key points of the meeting, she also had to quickly comprehend the meaning of the content.

Completely focused, with no thought for anything else.

Bo He knew very well that if she didn't put her mind to the details, she would forever be just a machine for recording meetings. That kind of job required no technical skill at all; even a high school graduate could do it.

Suddenly, she heard her name.

Bo He was slightly startled and raised her head.

A colleague sitting across from her was speaking.

It was a young woman from the Human Resources Department. Her eyebrows twitched as she spoke, so vividly it was almost sharp.

Although she had been here for half a year, it was impossible for Bo He to recognize every face from every department. She only vaguely remembered the other person's surname was Ding.

“Last week, I received a forwarded email from the President's Office, but the content was very general. The details we discussed and confirmed two weeks ago weren't included at all.”

The female colleague surnamed Ding swept her gaze over everyone from the President's Office before it finally landed on Bo He.

“The sender was Bo He.”

Everyone looked at Bo He, including Qin Chuan.

Bo He said, “Was that the email about the social mixer with other companies under the group and the exchange of experiential positions? I took notes immediately after receiving Tang Mi's request. The email was written based on those notes, so all the necessary content should be in there.”

She took out the notebook with her key points, opened it, and handed it to the female colleague.

“What did you find was missing?”

The other person glanced at it and said, “The specific details of the job exchange weren't written down. We had already confirmed all of that.”

Tang Mi blinked her pretty eyes. “I told you all about it back then!”

Bo He was certain her memory hadn't deteriorated to the point where she would completely forget something from just a few days ago.

Moreover, two weeks ago, she hadn't even started her new position yet, so she wasn't present for the meeting where the two departments communicated the results.

The problem was that Tang Mi had said the original notes couldn't be found at the moment and that a verbal summary would suffice. Bo He had believed her without a second thought.

But in this situation, continuing to argue with Tang Mi was definitely not a good option.

No one else cared whether Bo He was being wronged; they only cared if the matter could be resolved.

If she dragged it on, Bo He would only cause her impression score to plummet in the eyes of her boss and colleagues.

Half a second later, she chose to admit her mistake directly, standing up and bowing to everyone.

“I'm very sorry, it must have been my oversight. I'll add the information immediately when I get back. I apologize for the trouble I've caused everyone.”

Her apology was sincere, so the other party couldn't very well press the issue.

The topic was dropped, and the meeting continued.

Everyone's focus quickly shifted, and no one kept staring at Bo He.

Bo He continued to type rapidly on her computer screen. It was difficult for others to detect even a hint of grievance in her usual calm demeanor.

Qin Chuan didn't even glance in her direction.

It seemed today was not Bo He's lucky day.

After the meeting ended, everyone scattered and went their separate ways.

Bo He had just returned to her desk and hadn't yet had time to fix the mistake in the email when she saw Li Xi striding over in a hurry.

“When you came back at noon yesterday to get your card, were you hiding something from us?”

Bo He's heart skipped a beat. She subconsciously thought Li Xi was talking about the boss and Chi Yun's messy breakup in the parking lot.

But she maintained a placid expression and said as calmly as possible, “No, Li Xi. What's wrong?”

Li Xi said resentfully, “You're still hiding it from me! Go look at today's entertainment headlines yourself. Don't come to regret it later!”

After she left, Bo He opened a web page, and the headline “Newly Popular Starlet's Secret Rendezvous with Rich Heir, Suspected Romance Exposed” quickly came into view.

The moment she saw the news photo, Bo He knew this was bad.

The parking lot was a public place. Although only Qin Chuan, Chi Yun, and Bo He were nearby at the time, the news being exposed didn't necessarily mean Bo He was responsible. It was also possible that Chi Yun had arranged for it herself to generate buzz.

However, the coincidence was that the photo of their secret meeting looked like it was secretly taken with a phone, and worse, the shooting angle was exactly from the direction where Bo He had been standing.

Even the pillar in the photo that was half-obstructing the view looked extremely familiar.

Bo He had absolutely no interest in her boss's private life.

Not only was she uninterested, but she had been busy playing games over the weekend and had long forgotten about the incident.

But when Qin Chuan saw this photo, he would definitely think Bo He had secretly taken it and then sold it to the paparazzi to earn some extra cash.

And one couldn't even blame Boss Qin for this misunderstanding.

If it weren't for the fact that she hadn't lost her memory, even Bo He herself would have thought she had secretly taken the photo.

Bo He sighed, deeply feeling that she was only half a step away from unemployment.

Last week, it was a sparrow turning into a phoenix; this week, it was a metamorphosis.

Like the demons in Journey to the West, no matter how kind and gullible their disguise, their final fate was always to be beaten back into their original form.

She began to seriously consider how long it would take her to find a new job.

For someone like Bo He, who had graduated just over half a year ago, it was highly unlikely she could find another job with a more generous salary, no matter how hard she looked.
Besides, it wasn't just a matter of money.

Starting at Shengming Company meant having broader prospects in the same industry in the future.

The result of her contemplation was no result.

So Bo He stopped dwelling on it.

Before getting off work that evening, just as Bo He got the complete notes from Tang Mi, revised the email, and sent it out, Li Xi finally came to see her.

Li Xi had a listless expression, as if she had just been scolded, and her words were concise.

Starting tomorrow, you'll go back to the Customer Service Department and continue your customer reception work.

As if she had expected it, Bo He nodded and said okay.

Seeing that she didn't argue, cry, plead her innocence, or question the decision, Li Xi actually felt a little sympathetic.

“Do a good job. It's not like you won't have a chance to come back in the future. Don't quit impulsively, or all this will have been for nothing.”

This experience of Bo He's was jokingly referred to internally as "the shortest-lived Cinderella in history."

She was also laughed at behind her back. They said that even with wings, she couldn't fly onto a branch and become a phoenix. When the wind blew, all her feathers were blown away, revealing she was just a wild pheasant.

There were even uglier things said.

Her promotion had been sudden and unexpected, and she had no background or backing. Now that she had fallen so suddenly, there were naturally more people enjoying the show.

Such is human nature.

Acts of great kindness in times of need and acts of great evil are both rare.

But there are just as many who will add flowers to a brocade as there are who will drop stones on someone who has fallen into a well.

The supervisor of the Customer Service Department was her old boss. She was a good person and perhaps still remembered the favor Bo He had done her by tutoring her daughter. After Bo He returned to her original post, the supervisor called her in for a talk.

The supervisor didn't mock or lecture her, but instead comforted her: “It's not your fault you made a mistake. The politics in the President's Office run too deep. Most people who just transfer there probably make even more mistakes than you did. You just happened to run into the boss's scandal. But from what I know of you, you're not that kind of person.”

Bo He humbly asked, “Who exactly did I offend?”

The supervisor said, “You didn't offend anyone. This is just hearsay, but I heard that Tang Mi has always wanted to replace Li Xi. Since you were new to the President's Office, Li Xi was supposed to be your direct mentor. Now that you've made a mistake, Li Xi certainly can't escape responsibility. I also heard that Li Xi previously abused her position to recommend a friend of hers for your job, but the boss found out. Add this incident to that one, and don't you think the boss will settle both new and old scores with her at once?”

Bo He had a sudden realization. So it turned out she had gotten in someone's way and been caught in the crossfire of an indirect attack!

It was a true injustice.

But even if Bo He had known about this situation beforehand, it seemed it would have been impossible to guard against.

The other party had long intended to use her as cannon fodder. Who she was didn't matter; if it hadn't been Bo He, it would have been someone else.

No wonder her direct supervisor was Li Xi, yet the most enthusiastic person when she first joined was Tang Mi.

If Tang Mi hadn't been so enthusiastic, perhaps Bo He wouldn't have let her guard down so quickly.

As for who secretly took the photo, or whether Tang Mi knew in advance that the boss and the actress would be having lunch and would likely pass through there, and thus intentionally 'forgot' her card to make Bo He go back for it—none of that mattered anymore.

Tang Mi had already achieved her goal, and the boss's impression of Bo He couldn't get any worse. If Bo He were to go and complain without any evidence, she would probably have to resign the very next day.

Thinking of this, Bo He could only lament that she was too naive and hadn't yet learned to navigate these intrigues.

The supervisor's words of comfort were identical to Li Xi's.

“You live and you learn. You still have a chance, so don't be discouraged.”

Bo He smiled. “Thank you, I'm really fine. As long as I know it wasn't my own fault, that's enough. When someone deliberately plots against an unsuspecting person, not even an immortal could do anything about it.”

The supervisor observed her carefully. Bo He's expression was calm, her eyes as clear and bright as ever, without a trace of gloom.

She sighed. “You have a good attitude. Work hard, and next time there's a suitable position in the internal recruitment, I'll write a recommendation for you. The people in the President's Office are like the Eight Immortals crossing the sea; for a newcomer like you to be outmaneuvered by them is no disgrace.”

Bo He's eyes curved into a grateful smile.

If she were to speak of frustration and shock, there had been a moment of it.

But very quickly, Bo He had more or less adjusted.

She never made things difficult for herself, be it in work or in life.

Otherwise, if the experiences she'd had growing up had happened to someone else, many would have likely fallen into depression long ago, crying to the heavens or even hanging themselves.

To be alive, besides breathing, whether it's work or life, is ultimately about pleasing oneself and making one's body and soul more comfortable.

All happiness and unhappiness depend on oneself, and ultimately, the consequences fall back on oneself.

Being miserable and unhappy—what does that have to do with others? How many people would even care?

Bo He had overcome even more difficult situations in the past.

This small setback right now was naturally not a problem for her.

If one were to say that many people's moods have their cloudy and sunny days, then Bo He probably lived above the clouds.

Because her heart was filled with sunshine every day, leaving no dark corners to be found.

That evening, after Qin Chuan finished his work and logged into the game, he found that his master's avatar was grey.

She was not online.
