Chapter 88 - Chapter 86 Part 2

Wang Xu attached great importance to this performance. Or rather, he was extremely excited about standing out this time. First thing after arriving at school, he dragged Jiang Cheng into the corridor.

"I got the music classroom key from Teacher Xu. There's a piano there, I brought my guitar too, already put it there," Wang Xu looked at him, "Let's not go back at noon, just grab a quick bite, and go practice there?"

"I...haven't finished transcribing the score yet," Jiang Cheng felt a little overwhelmed by Wang Xu's fiery enthusiasm, "Why don't we go in the..."

"Just at noon, I don't need your score anyway," Wang Xu said, "Just tell me your part."

Jiang Cheng sighed, "You just play chords, I don't know guitar tablature..."

"You play it and I'll listen and remember it myself," Wang Xu said, "Noon, don't run off at noon. Every day you and Gu Fei vanish as soon as school ends, make him come to the music classroom at noon to listen to us practice."

"Ah," Jiang Cheng responded.

He didn't haggle further with Wang Xu, afraid he would say something else that made Jiang Cheng nervous.

Captain Wang seemed to know too much, luckily his brain was empty, otherwise they'd have to consider silencing him.

After school ended at noon, Wang Xu stood in front of the classroom door, staring at Jiang Cheng from afar.

"Go eat something with Wang Xu then," Gu Fei glanced at Wang Xu, "I'm going back at noon to do some editing, need to hand them in this afternoon."

"Okay," Jiang Cheng nodded.

He hadn't told Gu Fei this piece was his song, wanting it to be a little surprise for Gu Fei.

He was quite impressed with himself, just hearing it once, he could mostly transcribe it from memory. Though there were surely many inaccuracies in the details, after all it wouldn't be exactly the same arranged for piano...

Wang Xu dragged him to eat pizza across from the school. When Jiang Cheng wanted to go next door for drinks, Wang Xu didn't give him a chance. He hauled Jiang Cheng back to school like going to battle, straight to the music classroom.

To be honest, if not for Wang Xu mentioning it this time, he wouldn't have known No. 4 High actually had a music classroom. Aside from the piano there were quite a few other instruments too.

"Come on," Wang Xu lifted the piano cover, "Play me something first? What song?"

Jiang Cheng didn't speak. He suddenly remembered he didn't know the name of Gu Fei's song.

But it didn't matter anymore.

"Untitled," Jiang Cheng sat down on the piano bench.

"Huh...never heard of it," Wang Xu was puzzled for a moment, but quickly leaned eagerly on the piano again, "Play it and let me hear, maybe I've heard it but don't know it's called Untitled."

"You definitely haven't heard it," Jiang Cheng placed his hands on the piano keys. The instant his fingertips touched, a familiar yet unfamiliar feeling swiftly spread from his fingertips.

How long had it been, he hadn't even glanced at a piano again.

The intersecting black and white before his eyes, the feeling in his heart when his fingers touched the keys, he couldn't describe it.

He was stunned for a very long time without moving.

"Hey, Jiang Cheng," Wang Xu frowned at him, "You're not bluffing me right? You really can play?"

Jiang Cheng glanced at him but didn't speak. His fingers brushed over the keys, running through a scale to warm up his fingers and regain his former sense.

"Somewhat convincing," Wang Xu nodded, seemingly relieved, "To be honest you don't look like someone who can play piano, why not start with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?"

"Why don't you go out first?" Jiang Cheng looked at him.

Wang Xu didn't speak again, shutting his mouth.

Jiang Cheng stared at his own fingers. He took a deep breath, exhaled after closing his eyes, then placed his fingertips on the keys. This first note instantly brought him into the scenes Gu Fei had conjured with music.

I miss a step, I'm about to take flight
I'm lost looking up, looking down I hear you say this world is empty...
You count one two three, shatter the past, perish...

The wind blows, breaking the road home. Did you see me singing? You said one, two, three, turn around. You hear the erased panic...

Jiang Cheng didn't look at the music sheet. The song wasn't long and he had just written it down from memory, so he could basically play it with his eyes closed.

He didn't like the piano. Every time the unique feel of the keys was transmitted to his fingertips, his mind would be filled with those bored, gradually numb memories.

But today was a little different. Maybe it was because the melody between his fingers carried Gu Fei's aura, or maybe it was because he himself sitting here had a change of mood.

He sank into the music.

Even though he hit a few wrong notes, it didn't affect his emotions.

When his fingers left the keys after playing the last note, he stared at the black and white keys for a long time without moving.

Suddenly, enthusiastic applause came from behind him. Jiang Cheng was startled and quickly turned around to see Old Xu standing excitedly at the door of the music classroom.

"Damn, Teacher Xu, how did you get here?" Wang Xu was also startled, but soon started clapping as well. "That was so good! Jiang Cheng, you really...that was so unexpected, so unexpected! I really didn't expect it! It was amazing!"

"What song is this?" Old Xu walked over. "It seems like I've never heard it before."

"You probably haven't heard many songs, have you?" Wang Xu suddenly felt a sense of superiority.

"Then why don't you tell me, what song is this?" Old Xu humbly asked Wang Xu.

"This song is called... Untitled!" Wang Xu looked at Jiang Cheng, "Hey Jiang Cheng, why don't you introduce it to Teacher Xu?"

"Untitled?" Old Xu was puzzled. "Is there a piano piece called that? Who composed it?"

"Um..." Jiang Cheng hesitated for a moment. He felt that just randomly naming it "Untitled" was a bit perfunctory, but he also didn't want to ask Gu Fei. "The name is...still undecided."

"Still undecided?" Wang Xu was also confused. After a long pause he said, "Don't tell me you wrote this song yourself! Damn?"

"No no no, it wasn't me." Jiang Cheng quickly waved his hand.

"Then why is the name still undecided?" Old Xu asked again.

Jiang Cheng suddenly felt conflicted. Given Gu Fei's temperament, he really wasn't sure if just saying it out like this and letting Wang Xu and Old Xu know was appropriate.

"Let's just practice for now," he didn't answer Old Xu's question. "I'll...tell you later when I think of a name."

"Hey!" Wang Xu called out, seemingly unhappy. "Trying to hide it from me again, huh?"

"Huh?" Jiang Cheng looked at him.

"I'm just saying, Jiang Cheng, you really...hey, I'm going to the bathroom," Wang Xu turned and walked out of the classroom, face full of dissatisfaction. "You can chat privately with Teacher Xu. Damn, we're partners but you're still so inconsiderate...keeping everything from me..."

Jiang Cheng watched his retreating figure, opened his mouth but didn't say anything.

"Did you write it yourself?" Old Xu sat down excitedly next to him.

"Really not." Jiang Cheng looked at Old Xu.

"Then who wrote it?" Old Xu looked expectantly at him.

Jiang Cheng didn't speak. After a while, he said: "For the program notes, just put that I arranged it. That's fine."

"Is it Gu Fei?" Old Xu fell silent for a moment before asking hesitantly.

Jiang Cheng turned to stare at him in surprise.

"It is right? It is!" Old Xu stared back. "I know that kid played in a band in middle school, but I never asked him. With his personality, he's too hard to communicate with, too hard..."

"No," Jiang Cheng was still very surprised. "How did you know he was in a band?"

"I make an effort to understand every student," Old Xu sighed. "Only then can I be responsible for each of them. It was Gu Fei's mother who told me, or I wouldn't have known he could play guitar."

Jiang Cheng didn't know how to respond, so he just stayed silent.

"Gu Fei is a good kid, just too difficult to communicate with. I'm quite a failure as his homeroom teacher," Old Xu suddenly lamented, tapping the piano keys. "They say don't give up on any student, but it's hard to hold onto every one... Students like Gu Fei, I keep circling around him, going round and round, but I can't properly interact with him..."

Jiang Cheng still didn't speak, truly at a loss for words this time. He was quite surprised Old Xu would say this about a student, and also felt a bit awkward and emotional.

"I've seen the photos Gu Fei took," Old Xu said. "Such a talented child, so talented. It'd be a waste for him to keep self-destructing like this."

Jiang Cheng still didn't know what to say, only sighing lightly along with Old Xu.

When Wang Xu returned to the music room, Old Xu stood up and sat in a chair beside them. "You guys practice, I'll listen."

"I still don't know the sheet music," Wang Xu picked up his guitar. After the bathroom break, his annoyance had dissipated and he was excited again holding his guitar. "Jiang Cheng, play the chords for me and tell me where to come in."

"Okay." Jiang Cheng took out the sheet music he wrote and marked the chords for Wang Xu, then played them out.

If Wang Xu could be half as focused during class as he was now, Old Xu could probably cry on the spot.

After memorizing his part, Wang Xu tried playing it twice. "Like this right?"

"Yeah," Jiang Cheng nodded. "Let's try playing together."

When Wang Xu's guitar blended with the piano at Jiang Cheng's lead, Old Xu stood up in pleasant surprise and walked over next to the piano.

After a few measures, Jiang Cheng stopped and took the sheet music to make revisions.

"Damn," Wang Xu softly strummed his guitar strings. "I have this illusion that I'm a master now."

"I'm the one who is," Jiang Cheng said.

Wang Xu laughed. "Jiang Cheng, I've realized you can be quite shameless sometimes."

"Because I have the skill for it," Jiang Cheng glanced at him.

"F*ck, can you be any less modest?" Wang Xu said. "How can I say anything more after that?"

"You don't have to say anything," Jiang Cheng put the revised sheet music back on the stand. "Let's try again."

Though a failure as a top student, Wang Xu was decent as an accompanist. He reacted quickly, only occasionally coming in half a beat late on the guitar besides a few mistakes on his part.

"How was it!" Wang Xu waved his arms after leaving the music room. "What'd you think!"

"Pretty good," Jiang Cheng nodded.

"I'm thirsty. I'll go buy drinks, want me to get you something?" Wang Xu asked. "What do you want?"

"Ice lemon tea," Jiang Cheng said. "Thanks."

"What about you Old Xu?" Wang Xu looked at him.

"I'll have tea back in the office," Old Xu said. "I can't stand your drinks, too sweet lingering in my mouth all afternoon."

After Wang Xu left to buy drinks, Jiang Cheng walked with Old Xu towards the classrooms. As Old Xu was about to head to the office, Jiang Cheng called out, "Teacher Xu."

"What is it?" Old Xu turned back.

"Arrangement by Jiang Cheng, guitar by Wang Xu," Jiang Cheng said. "That's enough. I'll think of a name for the song and let you know in a couple days."

"Oh," Old Xu nodded, clearly disappointed. "Ok ok."

Jiang Cheng put his hands in his pockets and slowly wandered back to the classroom.

What would be a good name for the song?

The melody was a little confused and oppressed, and the lyrics conveyed the same feeling. Listening to it made people want to violently swing their arms to break free of the shackles surrounding them.

When he was writing down the music, there were some parts he couldn't remember clearly, some parts that were too oppressed. When he played, he instinctively pressed down hard on the keys several times, wanting to soar up, wanting to cry out.

I want

In your eyes

To run wild

I want

Just one look

Until the end

He took out his phone and called Old Xu: "Principal Xu, let's call that song 'Sa Ye*'."
