662 points.
When Gu Fei read out this number, his mind went blank for a moment, as he suddenly relaxed.
Sitting at the edge of the bed, he was in a daze for more than ten seconds before he slowly regained his ability to think.
That's good enough. It's higher than what Jiang Cheng estimated for himself. After all, he had skipped classes and gotten into fights frequently before, and had only crammed at the last minute relying on tricks. He was not a typical top student, so he could not compare with those study gods. With this score, things should be fine.
With the recent performance in their province, if nothing unexpected happens, he should have no issues getting into the school and major he wanted.
What he had told Shen Yiqing before, that no matter where, he could prove himself, those words have landed, and he did not boast idly.
Although Shen Yiqing would not know about it, but he did not intend for Shen Yiqing to know either. He only needed to know it himself, this had been what he wanted all this time.
"Brother Cheng." Gu Fei called him, bringing his thoughts back.
"Hmm?" Jiang Cheng looked up at him.
"Congratulations," Gu Fei said, "your hard work paid off."
"You didn't get tired out for nothing these past months," Jiang Cheng reached out and gently stroked his face, "Thank you."
"Don't make me say you're welcome." Gu Fei said.
"Boyfriend, you've worked hard." Jiang Cheng smiled.
"Just serving my boyfriend." Gu Fei squeezed his hand.
"Check your score," Jiang Cheng looked at the computer screen, "Hurry, let's see how many points you got."
"I guess I probably got just over 300 points or so, doesn't matter if I check it or not." Gu Fei turned around and started entering his exam number on the screen, "I thought before that your score divided by two would be mine."
"There's this kind of score estimation?" Jiang Cheng laughed.
"Pretty creative right?" Gu Fei finished entering his number and clicked with the mouse.
At that instant when the page loaded, Jiang Cheng suddenly felt short of breath. He was even more nervous than when waiting for his own score, and could feel his elbows resting on his knees trembling slightly.
Gu Fei would not score too high. He had spent over two years in class just playing stupid Candy Crush, even if he had accompanied Jiang Cheng to study these last few months, it was not systematic review. Based on normal judgement, just over 300 points should be about right for him...
But still, he felt nervous. The page loaded, the laptop was a bit slow, Jiang Cheng felt like he could not take it after just 0.x seconds, and lowered his head to rest his forehead on Gu Fei's shoulder.
He could not keep watching.
A few seconds later, Gu Fei's shoulder shook lightly twice.
"How many points?" Jiang Cheng did not move, still resting his forehead on his shoulder.
Gu Fei did not speak, and kept laughing.
"Damn you, Gu Fei!" Jiang Cheng yelled loudly.
"Over 400 points," Gu Fei said, "but the score is a bit funny."
Over 400? Jiang Cheng raised his eyebrows slightly. Based on last year, this score could easily get into a third-tier university. He quickly turned his head to look at the total score on the screen.
419?
"F*ck." Jiang Cheng said.
"Pretty funny right?" Gu Fei said, laughing.
"Your Chinese score is great! Liberal arts is decent too." Jiang Cheng's attention instantly shifted, "If not for the math...also this English..."
"I thought I wouldn't even get 30 points for math," Gu Fei laughed, "this is already exceeding expectations."
Gu Fei got 128 points for Chinese, but math and English dragged down a lot of points. These were not things that could be made up for in the last few months of studying together.
But overall, Gu Fei had been busy these last months, just going over and reading his notes occasionally. Getting this score was already very good.
Jiang Cheng got up and went behind Gu Fei, hugging him from behind and nuzzling into his shoulder.
"Give Old Xu a call," Gu Fei patted the back of his neck, "he must be waiting for your call, probably will call you soon if you don't."
"Okay." Jiang Cheng responded.
The provincial liberal arts champion this time scored 664 points. Jiang Cheng's 662 points did not let Old Xu experience what it feels like to have the champion in his class, but this was probably the highest gaokao score Old Xu had seen since he started teaching at No. 4 High School. Old Xu was so excited he could hardly speak clearly, and would call Jiang Cheng occasionally to exclaim about it. It gave off the feeling that he could happily retire now without regrets after having such an outstanding student.
Jiang Cheng's phone kept ringing the next few days.
Classmates, teachers, principal, head teacher, education bureau, admissions office, even when he went out to eat breakfast, the breakfast stall owner recognized him.
"You're that student called Jiang Cheng right? The one with the city's highest gaokao score this time? Jiang Cheng who was top 5 or top 10 in the province?"
"Ah," Jiang Cheng responded, "I want an order of baozi..."
"Hahahaha, see that!" The owner laughed heartily with hands on hips, "The city champion eats breakfast at my stall every day! My breakfast nourishes the brain!"
"Soy milk pudding..." Jiang Cheng said helplessly.
"That's right! Soy milk pudding also nourishes the brain!" The owner continued standing with hands on hips.
"Oil..." Jiang Cheng did not finish his sentence before getting interrupted.
"Oil sticks and fried dough sticks also..." The owner stood with hands on hips.
"Two portions to go!" Jiang Cheng raised his voice to interrupt him.
"Coming right up!" The owner immediately started packing it up, "Champ, breakfast is on me today!"
Back in the room, Jiang Cheng took out his phone and switched it off.
"What if someone needs to find you for something?" Gu Fei looked at him.
"There's nothing much now. Just admissions office teachers keep calling me. The score cutoff will be announced soon and I'll need to submit university preferences. They're all trying to pull people in," Jiang Cheng said, "I've decided long ago where I want to go, scrambling for it now doesn't make a difference."
"Did you tell Old Xu?" Gu Fei asked.
"...Let me give him a call now," Jiang Cheng looked at him for a moment, "I'm going to R University."
"Oh." Gu Fei was startled for a moment.
Jiang Cheng stared at the phone boot up screen. This was the first time he told Gu Fei about the university he wanted to attend. He didn't know why, but after saying it out, he felt strangely uneasy.
"You decided long ago?" Gu Fei asked.
"Mm," Jiang Cheng nodded, "I thought about it in middle school already. I'm interested in it, and I like that tangible feel of having a skill in hand."
"Sounds good," Gu Fei hugged him, "An outstanding major is better than a famous university, right?"
Jiang Cheng smiled and turned to give him a kiss.
