Chapter 83 - Epilogue Part 2

Seeing that he didn't directly faint from fright, Geng Zimo actually felt a bit relieved. Past experience told him that as long as Su Kun could still move and make sounds, it meant the situation wasn't at its most critical. At least his life shouldn't be in danger.

So he even kindly reminded, "I already said there's no signal, even if you call--"

Before he could finish, he heard Su Kun put the phone to his ear. After waiting for less than a second, he spoke, "Hello? Gu Yan, save me! ~~~~~~"

Geng Zimo: "..."

Ever since a certain person's soul became unstable again a year ago after being snatched away by that fatuous emperor, birds of a feather flocked together. Many lonely ghosts and wild spirits, in a moment of poor eyesight, mistook him for a little buddy and always liked to approach him.

Therefore... the tragic Su Kun, who had encountered ghosts for over twenty years, after barely two months of peace, once again started living this kind of "colorful" life.

But fortunately, Gu Yan also had a cell phone now. And over the past year, the increasingly capable master had made some modifications to his and Gu Yan's phones. No matter what kind of remote place, the signal was always full bars, and it could also locate.

Plus with Gu Yan's speed, he basically arrived as soon as called. It basically satisfied Su Kun's desire to bind himself to Gu Yan.

So, just as Gu Yan finished wiping away the last trace of black energy from his wrist after resolving matters in the west city, he received Su Kun's call. That howl of "save me" was so loud that even the master and others beside him heard it clearly.

"Tsk tsk tsk--this expressionless kid, you're destined to toil this life." The master jokingly patted him, "Hurry and go!"

Before he finished speaking, Gu Yan had already disappeared without a trace.

A minute later, Su Kun, who had been rescued from the elevator by Gu Yan and directly sent into the apartment along with the luggage, collapsed on the sofa, patting his chest, "Scared me to death."

Geng Zimo: "..." From encountering the ghost to Gu Yan arriving, it took no more than fifteen seconds in total. There wasn't even time to get scared...

"So, misfortune has started attaching to you again?" After asking with a sideways glance, Geng Zimo felt he misspoke, so he immediately corrected himself, "Oh right, misfortune has never left you."

Su Kun tearfully clung to Gu Yan, "If you were human, ten lives wouldn't be enough for me to drag you down."

The truly dragged down Geng Zimo: "..."

Gu Yan patted his head, "Mm, fortunately I'm a ghost."

Fortunately I'm a ghost, so your constitution is destined to be tied to me for a lifetime.

Outside the window, the sunlight slowly shifted to the most appropriate angle, slanting through the glass and into the room, casting shadows of the window frames on the dark brown floorboards.

Inside the room, the street outside the community gate could be faintly heard, with indistinct chatter and the bustle of traffic...

Against this not-too-noisy backdrop, life continued on, and so did happiness...

Author's note:

The light spots leaking through the dense leaves of the old tree fell on Gu Yan's body, and then slowly moved to his eyelids as the sun gradually shifted.

Even with his eyes closed, it was not very comfortable to be illuminated by the light. Gu Yan tilted his head slightly, and his fingers resting on the kitten's belly also moved.

Who knew that this movement, not knowing where it touched the kitten, the little creature, who was originally sleeping as if there was no tomorrow, instantly jumped up as if its fur had exploded. Its paws with pink paw pads directly stepped on Gu Yan's face, and then it ran out, howling, jumping three times and twice, flipping over the wall.

Completely awakened, Gu Yan touched his face with a helpless expression, shook his head, and simply returned to his room.

This little kitten was not raised in Gu Yan's mansion. As for its specific origin, he was not very clear. But it could be certain that it was not a wild cat, because its fur was always clean, which showed that someone cleaned it every day.

It probably belonged to a nearby household.

It accidentally broke into Gu Yan's courtyard a month ago. That day, Gu Yan had just sent off a few good friends. When he returned to the courtyard, he saw the housekeeper, Uncle Fu, holding a kitten and muttering something.

The little thing being held was listless, with all four paws hanging half-dead, as if giving up resistance and obediently being scolded.

Seeing that scene, Gu Yan found it a bit amusing, so he walked over and asked Uncle Fu what was going on.

Uncle Fu pointed to the mess in a corner of the courtyard and said, "This little thing has trampled the flowers and plants in the courtyard into a mess."

Gu Yan himself did not care much about these flowers and plants. If they were trampled, so be it. However, the little kitten's appearance of looking up and playing dumb was quite interesting.

So, he rarely took an interest and stretched out his finger to scratch its chin, and then told Uncle Fu to let it go.

Who knew that as soon as the little kitten's four paws touched the ground, it stopped playing dead and regained its nature of being a troublemaker. It even swiped a paw at Uncle Fu's beard, leaving Uncle Fu laughing and crying at the same time.

However, it was particularly fawning towards Gu Yan, following closely behind him all the way, from the courtyard to the room, and then out of the room again.

Seeing that it was getting late and the little kitten showed no signs of leaving, Gu Yan ordered someone to mix some cat food for it.

This little creature was probably really hungry. It buried its entire head in the bowl, eating with gusto. Only after finishing did it raise its head, pat Gu Yan's shoe twice with its paw, and then ran off with a dirty face.

From then on, this kitten would saunter over every afternoon. When Gu Yan lay on the rattan chair to take a nap, it would stick its butt out and burrow under Gu Yan's palm to nestle there. When Gu Yan woke up, it would follow him closely like a little tail, sometimes so closely that Gu Yan felt he might accidentally step on it.

However, in fact, this little rascal never lost a single hair.

As time went by, even when Gu Yan was not sleepy, he would sit on the rattan chair in the courtyard in the afternoon, flipping through books and military strategies, until the little creature jumped onto his lap.

This had almost become a part of his daily routine.

Unfortunately, even the longest vacation had to come to an end, and Gu Yan would be away from home for several years again.

As his victories and fame grew, Gu Yan's vacations became fewer and fewer. Moreover, with the passing of the old emperor and the ascension of the new emperor, it was the time when troubles were most likely to arise during the transition between the old and the new.

By the time he had a long vacation again, it was five years later in March, the same season when that little kitten had first accidentally broken into his courtyard.

Gu Yan still sat on the rattan chair in the courtyard every afternoon, sometimes flipping through books, sometimes taking a short nap, until the sun gradually set in the west. Then he would glance at the courtyard wall and return to his room. It had become a habit, repeating itself over and over again.

However, that little kitten never appeared again.

And in November of the same year, Gu Yan was falsely accused of treason by the emperor, and was executed by lingchi in public, with his family exterminated and property confiscated.

The once grand general's manor was now desolate and empty, leaving only the lonely old tree in the courtyard and the rattan chair that would never be sat on again...
