Raising the Evil Spirit

Raising the Evil Spirit

Chapter 41 - A Group of Oddballs

That young sprout-like man didn't have any air of a leader, but the words he spoke gave a different impression than his appearance.

He shook hands with the young man and smiled, "Thank you, sorry for the trouble! I'll take the person and files away now. From now on, this case will be handled by our side. I just talked to your leaders, as usual, in addition to keeping a copy of the final case report for ourselves, one copy will be submitted and one given to you. We guarantee there will be a satisfactory result, so that your Captain Chen won't give me the cold shoulder in the future."

The young man kept nodding, "Okay, okay, I will definitely relay this to Captain Chen."

"Then I won't disturb your work any further." The sprout said goodbye, then took the case files and confession, turned to Su Kun and said, "Young man, please come with us." After saying that, he turned and led the way out the door.

Su Kun stood in place, his mind swirling with that form of address - young man... Young man?! Damn, he looks younger than me but he's calling me young man?!

It wasn't until Gu Yan patted him that he reacted. He nodded to the young man, then hurried out. The moment he stepped out of the police station door and melted into the night, Su Kun suddenly remembered, from beginning to end, that sprout seemed to have never once glanced at Gu Yan floating beside him.

If he really was someone specially responsible for handling those strange spiritual events, how could he not even see ghosts? Then how would he handle it? Don't tell me he fumbles around in the dark, finds a Taoist priest to chant some incantations and calls it a case?

Just as Su Kun was letting his imagination run wild, he wasn't paying attention and missed a step. With an "ow", his whole body lunged forward. Gu Yan swiftly moved in front of him, wanting to cushion him, but unexpectedly, due to his small size, he was knocked back several rolls by Su Kun.

He only felt his vision go white for a moment, as if he had rolled from the dark into somewhere lit. Before he could react to where this was, he felt his whole body heat up, like a bunch of raging flames, burning from the inside out. Immediately after, his whole body began to swell with tingling pain, like in the dead of winter when your fingers are frozen stiff and even bending them feels difficult.

Although this feeling had only appeared once before, it left a deep impression on him, because that time, after this strange burning and stinging sensation passed, he had returned to his normal size.

He closed his eyes and furrowed his brows, waiting for this feeling to disappear, his heart vaguely anticipating and expecting.

Like last time, this feeling was bizarrely difficult to endure, but actually extremely brief. He only felt that usual light and airy feeling of being blown away by the wind suddenly disappear.

He heavily fell onto a soft cushion, his head hitting something exceptionally hard, making a "thunk" sound. As the pain in his left forehead spread, the burning and stinging on his body abruptly disappeared, just as it had abruptly appeared before.

Su Kun, still hidden in the night, only felt that something had blocked him, causing him to merely stumble a couple steps when coming down from the last stair, not actually falling. But when he steadied himself, he discovered that Gu Yan, who had been floating beside him, was gone!

Thinking of the feeling on his chest just now, the corner of his mouth twitched as he thought to himself: Crap, he was smacked away by my pecs!

But before he could search left and right, he felt someone pat his shoulder.

Su Kun turned his head and saw the sprout standing to the side, pointing to a van right ahead, saying, "Get in the car first."

Looking the van up and down, Su Kun felt this department was a bit shabby. This van was so ordinary that if you threw it on the street and turned around, you definitely wouldn't be able to find it. Even though it was a hazy night with only a street lamp not far away shining, he could still see the layer of dirt and dust covering the lower half of the vehicle body, clearly rarely washed and looking worn.

The model was the most traditional kind, with a total of three rows of seats including the driver's seat. Right now the side sliding door was open, revealing the empty second row. Through the tinted windows, Su Kun vaguely saw two more people sitting in the passenger seat and the last row respectively.

He hesitated for a moment, glancing at the sprout, wanting to find an excuse to stall for a bit and wait for Gu Yan, who he had smacked away, to roll back. But unexpectedly, as soon as he opened his mouth, before any sound came out, from the corner of his eye he saw that in the blink of an eye, someone had appeared in the previously empty middle row seat.

So, the words that had been rolling around in his throat changed as they came out: "Holy crap, a live person appeared!"

Su Kun stared in shock at the tall man who had appeared out of thin air in the seat, one hand pressing his forehead. He also seemed to not understand his situation. After lowering his hand, he expressionlessly swept his gaze across the entire car, then his line of sight turned back, passing through the open sliding door, meeting Su Kun's in the night.

"Gu Yan?!" Exclaiming in surprise, Su Kun didn't need the sprout to urge him. He scrambled into the car, kneeling on one knee on the seat, leaning close to Gu Yan's face. After staring dumbly for a while, he said, "The transparency isn't right!"

Gu Yan, still a bit dazed: "..."

Unlike last time when he grew bigger due to emotional fluctuations and some other factors, this time, besides being smacked senseless by Su Kun and feeling a bit exasperated from rolling a few times, Gu Yan didn't have any big emotional ups and downs.

Yet he still inexplicably returned to this normal size. Moreover, if last time his transparency was like it had been turned up to 98%, then this time, it was changed to 100%, with no difference from ordinary people like Su Kun.

Su Kun fearlessly reached out and pinched Gu Yan's cheek, pulling it to the side, thinking to himself: I've wanted to do this for a long time. If I can't pinch him when he's small, pinching him when he's big is the same!

While excitedly saying, "Wow! It's really the same as me, the feeling is completely no different." Last time when Su Kun had sprawled on Gu Yan's chest, although he didn't sink through to the ground, the feeling was more or less a bit strange. But this time it was as normal as could be.

Gu Yan expressionlessly brushed off Su Kun's paw that was taking the chance to make mischief on his face, then reached out and pinched Su Kun's cheek, solemnly saying, "Mm, indeed no difference."

Su Kun: "..." Damn you!

Just as he was shocked by the discovery that "Gu Yan, this dead-faced guy, is actually a closet pervert", and even forgot to slap away Gu Yan's calloused fingers, a slightly aged but vigorous voice interjected: "Ahem, can you consider the feelings of the two old folks in the car?!"

"Huh?" Su Kun turned his head in a daze to the left. The speaker was the person sitting in the back seat.

Su Kun had only seen a blurry shadow through the car window before, but now, thanks to the bright interior lights, he saw clearly - it was an old man, about sixty or seventy years old, with many wrinkles on his face, but bright eyes, looking very energetic, and sporting a goatee.

Su Kun's gaze moved from his face to his flowing Taoist robe and the yellow cloth bag slung across his body, then back to his face. After a few times, he suddenly pointed at the old man, his finger trembling, and finally squeezed out a sentence: "Black dog's blood!"

"Bullshit!" The old man bounced up from the back seat, shaking the whole car. He stroked his beard angrily and said furiously, "This old man has a name and a title! You little brat are the one called black dog's blood!"

"Ptooey, no, that's not right." Su Kun shook his head to clear it, then said again, "Aren't you that charlatan who splashed me with black dog's blood!"

The old man's face turned green. "This old man, if not learned and highly skilled, at least has real stuff. Last time I was just momentarily dizzy and made a mistake, how did I become a charlatan? You little brat are asking for a beating!" He roared at Su Kun angrily for about a minute, making Su Kun's head explode before he stopped.

Hesitating, Su Kun sized him up and dug his buzzing ears, reluctantly believing him. But the next second, he stared again in surprise, "Wait! How come you're in this car? Isn't this the crappy car of that special department?"

"You won't find a second car like this in the whole city of Li! You little brat, stop talking nonsense. If it was really crappy, could the kid next to you turn out like this? Besides, we are the backbone members of that special department you mentioned in Li City! It's perfectly normal for us to be sitting here! Tsk." Having said that, the old man turned his head away in an extremely conceited manner, with a look of 'this old man has no interest in talking to you now'.

"We?" Only then did Su Kun remember that there was another person in the passenger seat. He turned his face to the right and saw a thin old woman leaning on the seat back looking at them, her face full of amusement.

Seeing Su Kun looking at her, she restrained her look of relish and greeted, "Young man, we meet again! ~"

That familiar fluttering voice almost made Su Kun faint.

He suddenly felt extremely regretful for getting into this car. If he could say that he was at most mentally tortured at the police station, then he was simply threatened with his life in this car!

This was beyond what could be described as weirdos. Damn it, of the three elders in this car besides him, it was unclear whether two of them were even human! The remaining dead-faced General Gu was already confirmed to be a ghost...

Oh right, there was one more outside the car.

Su Kun weakly turned his head to look at Comrade Sprout standing there, only to see him smile at Su Kun, then go around to the driver's side door to get in the car. The moment he closed the car door, the little old lady spread her hands and said to him with a smile, "Little Li, come back."

The sprout's figure flickered and disappeared, and a small figurine with a big head and thin body appeared in the old lady's open palm.

Su Kun finally rolled his eyes, kicked his legs, and slumped against Gu Yan, completely fainting.

Gu Yan: "..."

The old lady clicked her tongue in exasperation, "Why are you like this every time you see me!"

The old man in the back seat, who had been pretending to be aloof, finally became active again. He nimbly took out a fire-red bird the size of a palm from his cloth bag and pointed at Su Kun, "Pomegranate, come, peck this little brat, peck where it hurts the most, guaranteed to wake him up with one peck!"

Su Kun let out a howl and came back to his senses, sitting upright with his hands properly covering a certain place.

Gu Yan turned his head and pinched the bridge of his nose, "..." Headache.
