Being stared at was making Qiao Shao distinctly uncomfortable.

The way He Shen was looking at him, you'd think he actually understood this problem!

He covered his paper and turned to look at him. "If you're curious, go do your own."

He Shen said, "There's nothing interesting about this worksheet."

Qiao Shao said, "Then what are you staring at?"

He Shen's lips curved. "I'm curious..." He had meant to say, "how many you can get right," but thought that might hurt Shorty's feelings, so he changed tack. "With such a little hand and such a thick pen, can you get a good grip?"

Qiao Shao: "???"

He Shen would have been better off not changing tack. This seemed even more devastating.

He cleared his throat. "What I mean is, don't buy just anything to save money. This pen isn't right for you."

Qiao Shao thought his last remark was terrible. It left him with the tragic feeling of wanting to get mad but having so many things to get mad about that he didn't know where to start.

"How is it not right for me?" Qiao Shao showed off his pen. "One pen, six colors. Six pens for the price of one."

Brilliant!

Qiao Shao was very pleased with its value for money. It was way cooler than his old Montblanc.

He Shen looked at him. "You use six colors to do a worksheet?"

Qiao Shao: "..."

"Give it here." He Shen held out his hand, palm up.

Qiao Shao put the pen in his palm.

He Shen confiscated it, then took three slim rollerball pens out of his desk cubby and handed them to him. "Use these."

Qiao Shao said, "No need. I can buy my own."

He Shen smiled. "Ten yuan apiece. You really don't want to trade?"

So what if they were ten yuan? Even if they cost a hundred thousand, Young Master Qiao wouldn't trade if he didn't feel like it.

Besides, his six-color pen was so cool!

Wait!

Qiao Shao caught on. A student living on fifty yuan a week, faced with pens worth ten yuan each... had to trade!

He Shen saw right through him and couldn't resist teasing him again. "Forget it if you don't want to."

With that, he closed his hand tightly around all three pens, leaving no gaps at all.

"Hey..." Qiao Shao said. "Who said I didn't want to trade?"

He Shen was inwardly amused. "Offer expired."

Qiao Shao was so mad. "Then give me back my six-color pen!"

"No."

"He Shen!"

"How about this? I'll trade you two pens for it."

Qiao Shao said incredulously, "It was three just a second ago."

He Shen said, "You didn't listen. Now the price has gone up."

Listen to you, my ass!

Qiao Shao did the math carefully. His pen had cost eleven yuan, while each of He Shen's cost ten, and they were easier to use than that chunky pen—only an idiot wouldn't trade!

"Deal!" Qiao Shao pried open He Shen's hand and snatched two pens.

He Shen had loosened his grip. Otherwise, there was no way this kid could have pried his hand open.

With his new pen, Qiao Shao's handwriting was much neater than before.

He Shen sat beside him, twirling the six-color pen between his long fingers.

He drawled, "If you'd listened sooner, you'd have three now."

Qiao Shao glanced at him. "Are you really that nice?"

He Shen's interest was piqued again. He took the remaining rollerball pen back out of his desk cubby and said to Qiao Shao, "How about this..."

Qiao Shao said, "Hmm?"

He Shen said, "Call me Dad, and it's yours."

Qiao Shao: ".............................."

And then "Daddy He" got a worksheet plastered across his face.

It was Tuesday, and the last period was set aside for a thorough classroom cleaning.

He could sleep through PE, but sleeping through cleaning while everyone else worked wouldn't look good, so He Shen slipped away.

Qiao Shao couldn't even be bothered with him anymore.

What left him helpless was that the entire class actually condoned this shameless behavior.

Not a single person protested.

Was this the power of being both a delinquent and an academic dud?!

This was a real eye-opener for Qiao Shao!

Because of his injured foot, Qiao Shao didn't have to help either, so he kept doing his homework.

Most of his classmates didn't mind cleaning. As long as they didn't have to sit through a proper lesson, sweeping, mopping, and washing windows were all pure joy.

Qiao Shao finally finished the math worksheet.

Since it was a practice worksheet, the total possible score was 100. Looking at all the answers he'd filled in, Qiao Shao figured he could get around eighty no matter what.

The modest goal he'd set himself was to rank in the upper middle of the class.

After all, he'd fallen far behind. Catching up would have to happen a little at a time.

Once he finished this math test paper, he still had his physics, chemistry, and English workbooks.

Brimming with fighting spirit, Qiao Shao decided to make a bathroom trip, then come back and keep fighting!

As he stood up, Song Yixu, who was waving a mop around up front, asked, "Where are you going?"

Qiao Shao answered him.

Song Yixu said, "I'll help you walk."

Qiao Shao hurriedly said, "No need. I can manage."

Song Yixu didn't insist, just told him to be careful.

Qiao's ankle didn't hurt as long as he kept his weight off it. The injury probably really was minor.

He limped to the boys' bathroom and spotted someone he knew as soon as he walked in.

"Chen Su, you're in charge of cleaning the bathroom?" The person Qiao Shao had spotted was none other than Chen Su, scrubbing a urinal with a toilet brush.

Chen Su paused, a light sheen of sweat on his face as he straightened up. "Yes."

He quickly added, "You need to use the bathroom? Those ones are clean."

Qiao Shao said, "I'll use a stall."

Chen Su acknowledged him and went back to work.

When Qiao Shao came out, he frowned. "Why are you all by yourself?"

Although there were four bathrooms on each floor, there were a lot of students, so every bathroom was quite large.

The bathrooms were common areas, and the classes took turns cleaning them. Class 1 was responsible for this bathroom this week, but surely that didn't mean Chen Su should be doing it alone.

Chen Su's hand paused slightly around the brush. "There were a few other classmates. They've all finished their share."

Qiao Shao frowned and was about to say more, but Chen Su added, "You should head back. I'll be done soon."

Qiao Shao said, "I'll help you."

Chen Su looked at him and smiled a little. "How can you help with your foot injured?"

"It's not like I hurt my hands."

Gratitude flickered in Chen Su's eyes. "It's fine. There's only a little left. I'll be done soon, so go back to the classroom. The floor's slippery here. What if you fall?"

Qiao Shao looked around. There really didn't seem to be much left, and with his limp, it would be frustrating if he only got in the way.

So he said, "Then I'll be in your group for next week's big cleanup."

Chen Su's head snapped up.

Qiao Shao said, "Don't worry. My foot will definitely be better by next week."

"Yeah..." Chen Su lowered his eyes. "It'll get better."

Qiao Shao left the bathroom feeling a little worried.

Was Chen Su being bullied?

He was so quiet and well-behaved, so diligent and serious about his studies. Why would anyone bully him?

But... at his old middle school, bullies had never cared how well you did in school.

Was it the same here?

Voices up ahead pulled Qiao Shao out of his thoughts.

"Think Chen Su will go tattle on us?"

"Nah. When hasn't he cleaned the bathroom? He's never told a teacher."

"Guess he's got some guts."

"Oh, please. It's his guilty conscience! After all the crap he's done, he deserves to clean the bathroom!"

"Maybe he just likes bathrooms..."

Qiao Shao couldn't listen anymore. He walked straight over and saw several familiar faces.

They were all his classmates, Song Yixu among them.

Qiao Shao frowned. "Why do you make Chen Su clean the bathroom every time?"

The others froze. Song Yixu spoke first. "Qiao Shao, you should keep your distance from Chen Su from now on."

Qiao Shao asked, "Why?"

"Because Chen Su's a piece of crap," a tall, solidly built boy said.

Qiao Shao remembered his name: Xie Kai.

"Talking about your own classmate like that makes you a piece of crap too," Qiao Shao shot back bluntly.

Xie Kai flared up. "You looking for trouble?"

Song Yixu held him back. "Qiao Shao just transferred here. He doesn't know what's going on yet."

Xie Kai scoffed. "I wouldn't be so sure. Maybe they're the same kind. Just look at what a sissy he is."

Now Qiao Shao was furious too. "What did you say?"

Song Yixu said, "Xie Kai, give it a rest!"

Xie Kai snorted.

Qiao Shao clenched his fists. If not for the thought that he'd only been at this school two or three days and would just be taken home if he got into trouble, he would have punched him already!

Song Yixu shooed Xie Kai and the others away, then pulled Qiao Shao aside. "I'm not trying to bad-mouth anyone, but Chen Su really isn't a good person."

Qiao Shao stared at him. "Don't go slapping labels on people."

"No, listen," Song Yixu told him. "You don't know. Chen Su's really weird. We've been in the same class for almost a year, and he never talks to anyone or has anything to do with anyone. He does everything alone."

That only made Qiao Shao angrier. "So what?"

"There's nothing wrong with that. At most, we'd just think he was gloomy and boring. But..." Song Yixu said, "He's got sticky fingers. He steals people's stuff."

Qiao Shao froze for a moment.

Song Yixu said, "You share a dorm room. Once your stuff goes missing, you'll..."

He shut his mouth before he could finish.

Qiao Shao had also spotted the pale-faced Chen Su up ahead.

Chen Su had finished cleaning the restroom. He was still holding a mop, sweat rolling down his forehead, making his gaunt, bloodless face look all the more wretched.

Qiao Shao called out to him. "Chen Su."

As if startled awake, Chen Su abruptly turned and walked away without looking back.

Poor Qiao Shao, with his injured leg, couldn't have caught up even if he tried.

He turned to Song Yixu. "Do you have any proof of that?!"

Song Yixu paused. "Lots of people know. Wherever he is, things go missing..."

Qiao Shao sneered. "You're convicting someone based on that? How many innocent people would be condemned if everyone did that!"

Qiao Shao ignored Song Yixu and made his way back to the classroom. Unfortunately, Chen Su wasn't there either.

Chen Su still hadn't returned by dinnertime.

He Shen, however, came over carrying a plastic shopping bag and sat down beside him.

"What's wrong?" He Shen asked.

Qiao Shao was in a terrible mood. "Nothing."

He Shen poked his cheek with a finger. "Then why are you all puffed up?"

Qiao Shao swatted his hand away. "Do you know Chen Su well?"

He Shen said, "Yeah. First place on the last monthly exam." Qiao Shao was the one who'd told him that.

Qiao Shao rolled his eyes, feeling he'd asked the wrong person. If anyone didn't fit in, surely the guy right in front of him took the prize!

All he ever did was skip class or sleep!

"What happened to him?" He Shen asked Qiao Shao.

Qiao Shao hesitated, then told him anyway. "They're calling Chen Su a thief without any proof."

Resting his chin on his hand, He Shen looked at him. "And you don't think he is?"

Qiao Shao said firmly, "He's not!"

He Shen said, "Why? You've only known him for two days, right? How much can you know about him?"

Qiao Shao retorted indignantly, "You've all known him for almost a year. Does that mean you know him so well?"

His question caught He Shen off guard.

Qiao Shao stood up. "I'm going to find him. I'll get to the bottom of this."

He Shen said, "And then what? Whether he stole anything isn't the real issue. It's that nobody believes him..."

Before he could finish, Qiao Shao turned and stared at him. "I do."

He Shen's pupils contracted slightly.

"Does it have to be a whole crowd?" Qiao Shao said. "Just me is enough!"

Looking into those bright eyes, He Shen was lost in a daze for a moment.

Did it have to be a whole crowd?

Did he need so many people's approval?

No...

One person was enough.

One person who truly believed him was enough.

He Shen drew a light breath. "Qiao Shao..."

Just about to go find Chen Su, Qiao Shao gave him a distracted "Hm?"

He Shen caught his hand. "I'm a little jealous."

Qiao Shao: "???"
