The Supreme God Xuan Cang certainly wouldn't let the female lead Bai Ling die, as it wouldn't benefit him in the slightest. All he wanted was to expose Lu Linsheng's true colors in front of Bai Ling. As long as they turned against each other, he would definitely save her before she died.
However, if Bai Ling remained stubbornly misguided, he would choose to watch her die, even if it meant abandoning this world.
In the end, Xuan Cang's lofty attitude stemmed from having many worlds that gathered fortune like this one, and Bai Ling wasn't his only female lead. If she irritated him like the female leads in the previous two worlds, he'd rather let her die.
So even though he knew that lowering his stance and flattering might work better on Bai Ling, he was unwilling to lose face and dominance. His outer persona's love for the female lead was mostly based on plunder, possession, and a desire for control. As for his inner persona, he found it even harder to have any genuine love for these female leads who were so different from him and looked down on him.
He still hoped to achieve the victory he wanted through force and destruction.
And this time, he felt he would win.
...
Lu Linsheng had already devoured many demons, but he hadn't stopped. Bai Ling stood at the foot of the demon corpse mountain, looking up for a long time, only seeing him continuously feasting at the top. The more he ate, the more ravenous he seemed to become. This situation made Bai Ling feel very uneasy.
She called out his name from below, "Lu Linsheng!"
He didn't seem to hear and continued his frenzied gorging. A pool of blood gathered at the base of the mountain. Bai Ling glanced down at her white boots standing in the blood.
She didn't call for Lu Linsheng again. Instead, she retreated far from the mountain of corpses and focused her gaze overhead. That was where they had entered. If they couldn't get out anywhere else, perhaps that was their only way out.
She had a severe fear of heights. Although her master and senior brothers would always tease her about it whenever they saw her awkwardly walking on the ground in dragon form, it wasn't actually a laughing matter, because it was terrifying for her.
Bai Ling had the most serious type of acrophobia, possibly inherited or caused by trauma from her scumbag father when she was young, or both. In daily life, she completely avoided high places and tall buildings.
For those with milder acrophobia, being in high places might just cause dizziness and nausea. But for Bai Ling, she would struggle to breathe, her body going limp until she fainted.
The worst incident was when playful classmates took her to a glass observation deck on a high-rise rooftop. The moment her blindfold was removed and she saw the view before her, her vision went black, her body turned cold, and sweat instantly soaked through her clothes as she collapsed. After that, no one dared to joke with her about it.
From her past life to this one, with no one forcing her and her not pushing herself either, she had never flown in the sky like a true dragon.
But this time, there was truly nowhere to hide.
She gave herself a mental pep talk for a while, then closed her eyes and transformed into a beautiful little white dragon. Luminous scales, pristine whiskers, a sleek and lovely figure, and large, bright eyes.
Old Seashell saw her looking up and asked in surprise, "Little master, don't tell me you're going to..."
Before he could finish saying "fly", the white dragon soared into the sky, surrounded by glowing night pearls accompanying her towards the barrier overhead.
The space trapping them was very large, and the barrier at the highest point was also extremely high. Bai Ling had only flown up a short distance, not even reaching the barrier yet, when she started feeling weak all over.
If she were in good condition, the situation might be slightly better. But right now, she was extremely nervous and in a terrible state, making it even more unbearable. Normally, Bai Ling might have given in to her fear and given up. But now, she gritted her teeth and continued upwards, trying her best not to look anywhere else and single-mindedly focusing on the very top.
Old Seashell, sensing his little master's discomfort and weakness, almost cried. He had been with the little master since her birth and witnessed how she resisted flying back then. Although he really hoped the little master could be like a normal dragon, seeing her suffer, he couldn't bear to force her. He would turn a blind eye to her "laziness", occasionally nagging about it.
But he never imagined a day would come when the little master would push herself like this.
"Oh, little master!"
As they neared the edge of the barrier, Bai Ling couldn't hold on anymore. Her vision went dark and she plummeted. The white dragon rapidly fell, the surrounding night pearls trailing down like meteors.
Old Seashell screamed, "Little master!" He had no choice but to take human form. The old man, the size of an arm, tried to grab the falling white dragon.
But like an ant unable to stop an elephant, he couldn't prevent Bai Ling's descent at all. Fortunately, Old Seashell yanking on her whiskers jolted Bai Ling awake at the last crucial moment. She managed to land on the ground, avoiding being half-dead from the impact. She coiled up on the earth as Old Seashell weakly collapsed by her large head. "You nearly scared this old man to death!"
Bai Ling didn't speak. After resting for a bit, she stood up again. Seeing that she intended to continue flying, Old Seashell hugged her claw in fright. "Little master, let's not try anymore. It's useless. Don't do such futile things."
"Everything is futile without trying." Bai Ling took off once more. This time, she glanced at the thin, tall figure on the demon corpse mountain before continuing her ascent. On the second attempt, she couldn't even reach the height of her first try. After struggling to land, she rested for even longer.
Old Seashell no longer spoke during her third attempt. He just soothingly stroked her dragon head and calf-like nose during her breaks, praising her like complimenting a child. "Our little princess is so amazing, so incredible."
Bai Ling: "Don't cry. Your pearls are rolling all over the place. I'm too lazy to pick them up. If I accidentally step on one when I fall down later, I might slip and tumble."
Old Seashell wailed loudly at her disdain. Strangely, while his loud crying would usually give Bai Ling a headache, this time she felt her dizzy mind clear up a lot, once again filled with strength.
She flew up again and finally touched the barrier. A dragon's body is very strong, so she directly used her body to crash into the barrier, but unfortunately it didn't budge at all. She also tried hitting it with her hammer, but it was still useless.
A dragon form is not good at using hammers, but if she were to change back into human form in mid-air, the breath she was holding would be released and she would very likely fall. So in the end, she still chose to keep ramming it with her head and tail.
Bang bang, the loud noises kept ringing out. The thin, long shadow on the demon corpse mountain suddenly paused its swallowing motion and raised its head. It saw the white dragon high above, the night pearls around her like stars, with her in the center like the moon, all emitting a radiance that illuminated the darkness.
Blood oozed from the beautiful white dragon's body; she had battered herself to the point of breaking, her scales falling off, before she lost all strength and fell.
The thin, long monster that was nearly rooted to the demon corpse mountain suddenly spread its wings. Its wings looked a bit different from the previous raven-feathered appearance, even larger and uglier, and the connection to its body began to resemble a demon's fleshy wings with a hard skin.
It flapped its huge wings and moved forward to catch the falling white dragon.
After the badly injured white dragon was laid on the ground, she slowly changed back into human form. There were several bloodstains on her white dress, and her face was also deathly pale.
"My head is so dizzy from the ramming, damn it, I've lost so much blood, it hurts so much!" She cursed weakly.
"Lu Linsheng? Can you still change into human form?"
Lu Linsheng held her, putting what should be his head against her neck. After hearing her words, it took him a good while before he changed back into the form of that scholar. Bai Ling felt something wet on her neck, so she reached out and grabbed a handful of Lu Linsheng's hair at his temple.
She was bleeding, yet he was still drooling over her, how inappropriate was that?!
But thinking carefully, if the juice from a chicken leg overflowed, it would indeed smell a bit more fragrant. Bai Ling spat out a mouthful of blood. "Lu Linsheng, if you drool on me again, I'm going to hit you."
Lu Linsheng: "I wasn't drooling."
Bai Ling: "Then what's this wet stuff?"
Lu Linsheng: "...I felt pain, maybe it's bleeding."
Bai Ling pulled his head up from her neck and saw that there were no injuries on his body at all, but there was water in his eyes.
"What bleeding, these are tears!" Bai Ling said.
Lu Linsheng: "You're in pain because you're bleeding, so isn't my pain also because of bleeding? Does shedding tears also count as bleeding from pain?"
Bai Ling: "...You cry because you're in pain. How come you're crying again." She wiped Lu Linsheng's face a bit uncomfortably, wiping away the water droplets on his face.
She thought with worry, when she first met Lu Linsheng, he was foolishly a bit like an idiot, but later he clearly became smarter and smarter, but now after eating so many demons here, he was starting to become a bit foolish again. Old Seashell was right, this stuff can't be eaten too much, eating it lowers intelligence, too scary.
"You'd better not eat those demons." Bai Ling said.
Lu Linsheng lowered his head and licked her forehead, which had been cut open by the ramming and was bleeding. He licked it a few times and slowly replied, "Won't eat anymore."
Bai Ling wanted to push him away, but felt that his foolish appearance was pitiful, so she didn't have the heart to do so and simply let him lick. If he can't eat, then licking to curb the craving is fine too.
Lu Linsheng felt that the fresh, sweet taste in his mouth was very good, but at the same time he also felt pain, so he couldn't help hugging Bai Ling's head and rubbing against her cheek.
Unable to find a way out at the top, Bai Ling was dejected. On top of her injuries and the lingering dizziness from her fear of heights, she wasn't feeling very well overall, but Lu Linsheng held her and intimately snuggled up to her, making her feel a kind of cherishing and comfort similar to Old Seashell.
She didn't remember who had said that in this world, love is the hardest thing to hide. Lu Linsheng was like this - when she was still at a loss, he already seemed to like her very much. This feeling even made him as docile as a harmless herbivore at this moment.
"Let me rest for a bit and think if there are any other ways." Bai Ling turned over and closed her eyes.
After a while, not hearing any movement, she opened one eye and found that Lu Linsheng was no longer by her side. She sat up abruptly and looked over at the demon corpse mountain, but didn't see Lu Linsheng. Realizing something, she looked up and vaguely saw a dark shadow flying upwards.
Bai Ling got up and limped a few steps forward, floating the night pearls up to illuminate Lu Linsheng who had already flown to the top.
He was trying to ram the barrier like her, but it was also useless. After hovering around for a while, instead of choosing to keep ramming the barrier, his entire body rapidly dissolved, turning into a large expanse of black - from Bai Ling's perspective below, Lu Linsheng had melted, his body spreading out like black flowing water, trying to cover the entire barrier.
Bai Ling heard a faint sizzling sound as the black, flowing water wriggled. After a very, very long time, the surroundings actually started buzzing and shaking. Bai Ling's eyes suddenly widened as she waited with bated breath in anticipation.
Outside, the Supreme God Xuan Cang slightly furrowed his brow and raised his hand to cover the small cauldron in front of him. Purple light enveloped the entire cauldron, suppressing its shaking.
"Supreme God!" An immortal attendant hurriedly walked into the temple, a hint of panic in his expression. "The Demon Dragon of the East Sea has attacked Mount Youfu and is about to break through the mountain gate!"
The Supreme God Xuan Cang put down his hand. "What are you panicking for." He stood up and walked out of the temple. "You stay here and watch over this cauldron."
Inside the cauldron space, the buzzing and shaking suddenly stopped. Lu Linsheng, who had turned into pitch-black flowing water, gathered back into his original form and flew down unsteadily. Bai Ling stepped forward and caught him.
"I think you're more amazing than me." Bai Ling pressed on Lu Linsheng's shoulders. "I have an idea now."
