Deep Sea Drifter Diary

Chapter 59 - Chapter 58 Part 1

Aegon was held up by a few sturdy tribesmen, unable to throw himself onto Aeron for the moment. The two women responsible for treating the wounds were also startled upon seeing Aeron's condition. They then waved at Xia Chuan and Shen Lan, gesturing for them to carry Aeron back.

Xia Chuan continued to press on the neck wound, not letting go. With Laura's help, Shen Lan scooped up Aeron. Together with Xia Chuan, they walked back inside the walls at the same pace.

Aegon stood in a daze for a while, as if he couldn't even find the door to go back. His steps were messy and he tripped over himself.

Stumbling a few steps, he grabbed one of the tribesmen supporting him and said something rather urgently. He was then led back inside the walls, following behind Xia Chuan and Shen Lan, heading straight for the place designated for the injured.

The chief had also come and was waiting at the door. Upon seeing Aeron in Shen Lan's arms, his face turned grim with self-blame and deep sorrow.

After this experience, seeing the injured before them, the chief and the others in the tribe, including Shen Lan and Xia Chuan, understood the reason why the group of beasts at the slope below the main gate never left. They just maintained a not-too-close yet not-too-far distance where they couldn't hurt anyone but also wouldn't get hurt themselves.

This kept the entire tribe on guard and alert against them, fearing they would attack. They firmly grasped the attention and gaze of the whole tribe, successfully pulling off a diversion, allowing another small group of beasts to sneak in from elsewhere while attention was diverted.

Xia Chuan and the others felt the beasts couldn't be that simple and wouldn't have the habit of a strong offensive, but they never imagined they would pull this move, instantly feeling a chilling sensation down their spines.

Unfortunately, even after learning of these twists and turns, the chief still couldn't let the people at the front withdraw, because those menacing beasts also hadn't left. At the same time, he had to send people to pay attention to movements in other places.

This was a very difficult balance to strike.

Sending too many people to other places would lead to dispersing manpower. The group of beasts lurking at the front might then seize the opportunity to launch an attack and snatch a few people. Those scattered in other parts of the wall would also be in a dangerous situation due to being outnumbered.

If people weren't sent to other places and forces were concentrated to confront the group of beasts head-on, it could very likely lead to a repeat of what happened to Aeron, resulting in more casualties.

As the chief, he naturally couldn't focus his attention solely on an injured tribesman. He had to ensure the safety of more people. So he gave Aegon a firm hug, patted his shoulder with a sorrowful expression and said a string of words, then left.

As he walked, he summoned a few other sturdy tribesmen, gave them some instructions in a low voice while pointing at a few of the tribe's mud huts. Only after fully relaying the orders did he leave, rushing towards the main gate again.

Shen Lan carried Aeron while Xia Chuan pressed on Aeron's largest bleeding injury. The two carefully walked into the large mud hut designated for the injured.

The two doctors gestured at Xia Chuan and the others, indicating for them to place the child in the center.

Aeron lay beside the fire. The two female doctors bent over with sorrowful and pitying expressions, cleaning the blood from his body.

Aegon directly fell to his knees beside Aeron, his eyes red, silently shedding tears. He didn't tightly hug Aeron to obstruct the doctors' cleaning, but his gaze seemed nailed to Aeron, dazed and desperate, not blinking at all.

Dennis, who had been sleeping against the wall, was now startled awake by the commotion. After a dazed moment, he waved at Xia Chuan, lowered his voice and quietly asked, "What's going on?"

Although he had just woken up and his mind was still a bit muddled, he keenly sensed the abnormal atmosphere in the room. He didn't even dare point in Aeron's direction, just pursing his lips and slightly gesturing.

Xia Chuan also lowered his voice and replied, "Beasts attacked the tribe, he was bitten." He gave a simple summary and briefly outlined the situation to Dennis.

Dennis glanced at the shocking blood stains on Aeron and asked, "Can he be saved?"

Xia Chuan shook his head without a word.

Dennis groped for his waterproof bag hidden by the bedside. After rummaging for a while, he took out everything related to medicine and compared them one by one. In the end, he still shook his head and said, "There's no suitable medicine. Even if there was, it would be useless. After all, the child's throat was cut by the beast's teeth."

Even in modern times with complete medical facilities, this would be a very deadly situation, let alone in such a primitive environment.

They couldn't do anything and could only watch helplessly as Aeron became still in a very short time. The two female doctors lowered their heads and made a few simple gentle motions with their hands.

Aegon seemed oblivious, continuing to kneel on the ground, tightly gripping one of Aeron's hands, his gaze blank and expression empty, as if still waiting for the boy to wake up.

Xia Chuan and Shen Lan exchanged glances, feeling this atmosphere was really not suitable to be disturbed. They waved at Dennis to signal, then quietly left the mud hut.

The two first passed through layers of mud huts, returned to the one they were staying in to retrieve Xia Chuan's dagger, then came out and looked towards the main gate.

They saw the chief and the others still gripping torches, crouching on the walls. A few who couldn't stand it directly threw stone arrows down the slope. However, it seemed to have little effect and everyone still couldn't relax.

Xia Chuan didn't go back up the wall, but walked to the edge of the gate to observe. He found that group of beasts only slightly retreated to avoid the stone arrows before gathering together again.

The people inside the walls didn't continue throwing weapons. After all, the distance was too far. Not only was there no accuracy, the power was also insufficient. Throwing them out would be futile and wouldn't change anything.

"They won't attack from this side." Shen Lan stood beside Xia Chuan and glanced over. He pulled Xia Chuan to a place no one was paying attention to. The two climbed over the wall one after the other and circled the outer perimeter of the wall twice.

After confirming there were no beasts lurking at the base of the walls ready to pounce, the two of them simply went down the slope, heading straight for the wild forest at the foot of the main gate.

Xia Chuan re-sheathed the dagger at his waist, while the gleaming blade deftly spun in his hand before being gripped tightly. The tribe had suffered at the hands of these wild beasts, so they had a deep fear of them, but Xia Chuan and Shen Lan had no such qualms.

In a sense, these two were almost entirely fearless, with no real concept of being "afraid" of anything.

They didn't even take any roundabout tactics, instead charging straight at the group of beasts.

The two of them still had the blood and scent of the previous few beasts on their hands. For beasts of the same species, this scent was absolutely the most intimidating thing.

So before they even got close, the group of glaring beasts keenly sniffed out the scent on them, then bared their teeth, grunting heavily in their throats as they hesitantly took a couple steps back.

Xia Chuan spun the dagger in his hand, the shiny blade clearly visible even in the night.

He was still inclined to confront them for a bit. If he could scare this group of beasts away without exerting any effort, that would naturally be best.

But Shen Lan wasn't so particular. He had seemingly not fully vented the pent-up anger he had on the previous three beasts, so now charging up to this group of beasts was like a wolf falling into a sheep pen.

Xia Chuan let go, and Shen Lan directly pounced at the group of beasts.

That group of beasts never imagined these two who had single-handedly charged up to them would completely disregard the rules, not even giving a word of warning before directly leaping to attack them.

The previous ploy to lure the tiger away from the mountain proved these beasts were extremely cunning and difficult to deal with. Now facing Shen Lan's simple and crude assault, they panicked a bit. But their instinctive nature made them scatter in all directions without a second thought.

About eight beasts scattered in an instant, running off in eight different directions. Their speed was extremely fast, their bodies not small but extremely agile, disappearing without a trace in just a few bounds.

Xia Chuan and Shen Lan weren't fools either. They didn't seek to catch them all in one go. Xia Chuan simply wanted to drive them away, considering it a way to repay the tribe. Shen Lan's motive was even more straightforward - he was simply angry and wanted to vent, not caring if the target was human, beast or object, single or group.

Almost as soon as the beasts scattered, the two each locked onto one direction and began relentless pursuit.

But Xia Chuan was pretending, while Shen Lan was for real.
