Deep Sea Drifter Diary

Chapter 38 - Chapter 38

They had seen too many such dark shadows along the way and could guess without getting close that they were two fallen dinosaurs.

The group, having seen so much death, had become somewhat numb, but numbness did not mean complete indifference. They were not very willing to go near the corpses, so when heading towards the river, they unanimously avoided the two huge dark shadows.

The river was wide but not deep. If Shen Lan transformed back into his Mosasaurus form and leaped in, he would definitely sink to the bottom, but it was enough for the group.

Mediterranean Circle was so excited that he seemed to have a new lease on life. He ran to the front without even taking off his clothes and plunged into the river with a splash, nestling in a shallower area, then let out a long breath, seeming much more comfortable.

The rest of the group was much more restrained, only squatting by the river to scoop up water and splash it on their faces several times, while also washing their arms and other exposed areas. Protruding Ears and another silent man took off their tops and used them as towels, soaking them in water to wipe their entire bodies.

The layer of sweat and dust covering their skin was washed away, and without that unbearable sticky feeling, it seemed like the burden on their whole being was lightened a bit.

Although the river water was very different from the seawater Shen Lan was used to, there was no luxury to be picky at this time. For a moment, Shen Lan also wanted to jump directly into the river like Mediterranean Circle, but Xia Chuan, who was right next to him, quickly grabbed his clothes.

Shen Lan looked back at him and simply explained his behavior: "I'm very thirsty..."

Xia Chuan actually understood very well. For someone used to soaking in the sea, trekking on this stuffy and dry land, it was good enough not to be dried into jerky. However, he still did not let go, but pointed to Shen Lan's clothes with his chin and said hoarsely, "Getting them wet will be too heavy and waste energy on the journey."

His voice was weak and low, almost as if talking to himself, showing how exhausted he was. But he was not wrong. The group was nearly at the end of their strength. Even though Shen Lan was much stronger than ordinary people, he had long shown signs of fatigue.

This river actually did not help the group as much as imagined. Rather than physiological benefits, it was more of a psychological relaxation. And the road ahead was still unknown in distance and duration. How many people could hold out until the end? Naturally, physical strength should be conserved where possible.

On normal days, the bit of weight from wet clothes could be endured by anyone, but at this time when even taking a step was somewhat laborious, an extra bit of load could possibly shorten the final distance by a few meters...

Seeing Shen Lan nod, Xia Chuan released his grip on his clothes, but before he could retract his hand, it was grabbed by someone again.

"What?" Xia Chuan actually did not like being held by the hand. After "steaming in the sauna" for so long on the way, even he, who did not sweat easily, had some dampness in his palms. If he had to touch something with a sticky, moist texture, it would be unbearable for him.

But Shen Lan's physique was different from ordinary people. There was no uncomfortable sweat in his palms. As he said himself, they were a bit dry. And his body temperature was a bit lower than Xia Chuan and the others, feeling cool to the touch.

To be honest, it felt quite nice.

So Xia Chuan endured it and did not withdraw his hand, just letting him hold it.

"Oh, you look too tired, so I'm lending you some strength." As Shen Lan spoke, he exerted force with his hand and pulled Xia Chuan to the river's edge.

The water in the river was actually not cool, not much different from the constantly rising ambient temperature. When Xia Chuan untied the cloth covering his mouth and nose that was almost dry, and scooped up a handful of river water to splash on his face, he only felt that it was not as comfortable as the temperature of Shen Lan's palm just now, but at least it could wash away the sweat stains.

Fortunately, the air near the river was slightly better than other places, with a lighter sense of dust haze, not as unpleasant, making it a rare suitable resting place along the journey.

The group had their fill of water and temporarily did not have the strength to continue. They all sat down by the river and relaxed, massaging their legs and feet. The accumulated fatigue from the trek that had nearly peaked finally eased a bit. Although the dizziness and nausea persisted, it was enough for everyone to catch their breath.

The first to recover was actually the smallest one - children are just so amazing. Sometimes they seem so fragile that they might die at any moment, while other times their vitality is surprisingly strong.

The little boy Allen had short legs and was short in stature. In order not to drag the team down, Laura always carried him for a while, then let him walk for a stretch, alternating like this all the way here. Because of this, Allen still had some stamina left.

Or perhaps it was because the air was relatively better at lower heights, his dizziness and nausea were not as severe as the adults. After resting for a while, he started playing with the water along the river.

So when Laura looked up again, she found that Allen had run to the side of the two dinosaur corpses.

She wanted to call out to him, but unfortunately she didn't have the strength and couldn't raise her voice. The little guy either didn't hear it or heard it but didn't look back. He stood in front of those two shadows, looking even shorter in comparison.

Perhaps it was because seeing such large corpses up close was a bit scary or something, but Allen stood still about two or three meters in front of the two shadows for a while without moving. After a moment, Laura saw him tentatively walk a few steps closer and seem to place his palm on the larger of the two dark shadows.

A few seconds later, Allen withdrew his hand as if he had been electrocuted, and then hurried back along the river. When he was still a short distance from Laura, he pointed behind him and called out to her, "Mom, the dinosaur is still alive! It's breathing! I felt it!"

His voice was not loud, but the few people resting in this area all heard it and immediately raised their heads. Although they were not of the same species and did not belong to the same place, suddenly hearing the news that there was still a living creature in this situation made everyone feel better.

"Its body is rising and falling, but it has injuries and a scar on its eyes." As Allen described the appearance of the large dinosaur, Professor Linton and Dennis paused for a moment. Even Xia Chuan and Shen Lan looked up at the two dark shadows.

Professor Linton waved at them and said, "I'll go take a look." He got up and walked towards the dark shadow. After just one glance, he shouted back at Xia Chuan and the others, "It's him! It's Yaya! My God! He's still alive!"

He didn't have the strength to run back, but his steps weren't slow either. As he approached, he said, "He's indeed injured, with several scratches on his body. The color of the blood doesn't look right; he may have been cut by something poisonous."

Laura, who was holding Allen nearby, listened for a while and chimed in, "Why don't I go take a look?" She could tell that Professor Linton and the others had a special connection with this dinosaur called "Yaya," and among everyone present, only she could do something to help Yaya at this time, even though she had never treated such a... frightening "pet."

Actually, saying "treatment" was an exaggeration. In this situation where they lacked everything, it would be good enough if she could help alleviate some of its suffering.

Having too many people go wouldn't help, so Laura followed Professor Linton, and Allen, at his age, always had a sympathy for animals no less than his peers, so he also trotted over to help. The rest of the group remained resting by the river.

Shen Lan squatted by the river, scooping up water to relieve his dryness while chatting with Xia Chuan, who was sitting beside him. Xia Chuan's gaze would occasionally fall on the oscilloscope in Dennis's hands, checking its status.

"I think I really heard it beep just now..." Dennis said with a bitter face, holding the oscilloscope screen up to Xia Chuan for a look, then burying his head in it again, muttering, "How can there be no change at all? Did I hallucinate from dizziness?"

The two sat close to the river to accompany Shen Lan, and even small ripples could reach their pant legs.

But Shen Lan hadn't been still for long when he suddenly stared at something in the river and let out an "eh," as if he had discovered something. Ever since Xia Chuan was bitten by a poisonous insect in a puddle and felt numb all over, he had become a bit sensitive about these wild rivers.

As soon as he heard Shen Lan's voice, he immediately turned his head and said, "What's wro--"

Before he could finish, Shen Lan had already dived into the river. This man was probably used to being domineering in the sea, and even entering a shallow river, he did so with great vigor, splashing up a large spray of water that drenched the people on the shore.

Xia Chuan: "..."

Dennis: "..."

Great, not only were Shen Lan's own clothes soaked, but he also dragged these two down with him.

Dennis was stunned for two seconds, then immediately started howling like his butt was on fire, wiping the water off the oscilloscope and using Protruding Ears's sleeve to wipe it, afraid of causing the oscilloscope to malfunction.

Xia Chuan's eyes suddenly became very busy, on one hand keeping an eye on Dennis's oscilloscope to see if it was affected by the water, and on the other hand watching Shen Lan in the river to see what he was up to.

Fortunately, not only did Dennis's oscilloscope not malfunction from the water, but after being shaken and moved around for a while, it suddenly started beeping and the waveform on the screen began to change.

Dennis: "..."

Protruding Ears: "..."

Xia Chuan suddenly remembered a place he had lived before, where an elderly neighbor living alone would always give his malfunctioning appliances a few "whacks," and somehow eight out of ten times it would work. Only when it didn't work would he come knocking on Xia Chuan's door, asking if he could help take a look, wondering if perhaps he hadn't whacked it hard enough.

And while the three were stunned, Shen Lan, who had been feeling around the river, suddenly poked his head out of the water, holding something in his hand and waving it at Xia Chuan to show off: "Look what I found!"
