Death Progress Bar

Chapter 86 - The Truth

Following Shi Jin's instructions, the prison guard came in and removed Xu Chuan's handcuffs, then poured two glasses of water.

Shi Jin held the glass of water and remained silent, patiently waiting for Xu Chuan to compose himself.

With trembling hands, Xu Chuan reached for the photo on the table and looked at the young Jian Jinwen. After a long while, he finally spoke, "Jinwen looked like this when he was a child... I knew him when he was already very sick, I didn't know he used to be so healthy... It's good, it's really good."

Shi Jin took a sip of water but still didn't say anything.

The room fell silent as Xu Chuan stared at the photo for a long time before regaining his composure. He carefully covered the photo with his hand and looked at Shi Jin, asking, "What do you want to know?"

Shi Jin put down his glass and met Xu Chuan's gaze, who had hidden all his emotions. "I want to know who ordered you to buy off the Werewolf group. Don't tell me it was Xu Tianhua, I don't believe it."

Xu Chuan's eyes flickered, and he lowered his head to avoid eye contact. "I can't tell you that."

Shi Jin wasn't going to be fooled. "That's exactly what I want to know."

He pulled out a photo from his pocket and slammed it onto the table. "Xu Chuan, I bet my dad never told you this, but Mr. Jian had a period of extreme obesity during his adolescence, just like I did."

Xu Chuan looked up again and saw the photo in Shi Jin's hand. He couldn't believe it and struggled to control his emotions as he said, "No, you must be lying to me. It's clearly..."

Seeing his reaction, Shi Jin understood. People like Shi Xingrui would never tell anyone that they had once avoided someone they liked because of their appearance. It was too embarrassing.

Xu Chuan didn't know that there was much more to the story than he had imagined. With a sudden change of heart, he interrupted Xu Chuan and became aggressive once again: "What do you mean 'clearly'? It's clear that it's my dad's fault for being too doting on me, and it's clear that I, as a perfect replica, am disgusting for not cherishing Mr. Jian's appearance and ruining it? Xu Chuan, you must hate me for ruining the perfect image of your beloved in your heart, but you're wrong. Your beloved was actually a chubby kid when I was his age. And I want you to understand one thing, I didn't just let myself go and become fat, my dad intentionally made me fat. Can you guess why?"

"Shut up!" Xu Chuan's heart was shaken, and he wanted to argue back, but looking at the photo in his hand, he realized that what he said was probably true.

"Xu Chuan, you know, in this room, you have no right to shut me up," Shi Jin responded coldly, leaving no room for negotiation.

Xu Chuan froze, and after a moment, a hint of despair appeared on his face. He lowered his head and said in pain, "Why didn't he ever mention these things to me? Am I not his friend...why didn't he say..." He completely avoided the issue of intentionally fattening up Shi Jin, as if he couldn't accept it.

Shi Jin wanted him to break down. He pointed to the photo on the table and said, "Because Mr. Jian is different from you. He never uses his own suffering as a bargaining chip to extract warmth from others. Xu Chuan, you tell me what I want to know, and I'll tell you what you want to know. Give me an answer, or I'll leave immediately."

Xu Chuan shifted his gaze back to the photo in his subordinate's hand, his face showing a struggling expression. Finally, as if he had made a decision, he looked up at Shi Jin and said, "I want to see the photo in your hand."

"You give me the answer first," Shi Jin did not compromise.

Xu Chuan looked at him, as if he couldn't accept the cold and cruel expression on his face. He took a deep breath, turned his head to the side, his Adam's apple moved, and replied, "It's not Xu Tianhua."

Shi Jin stared at him, his eyes unmoving.

"It's... the mother of your eldest brother, Xu Jie," Xu Chuan said, looking up at Shi Jin. "Don't be too surprised. I know you rely heavily on your brothers, but the person who wants to harm you..."

He paused halfway through his sentence, because Shi Jin's face didn't show the surprise he had expected. Instead, it was a look of understanding, as if he had already known.

Shi Jin did feel a sense of relief and understanding in his heart, as if the dust had finally settled on the plot. He looked back at Xu Chuan with a meaningless smile and said, "Why do you have that expression? Did you think I would come talk to you without enough information? Keep talking. I want to know the whole truth of what happened back then."

Xu Chuan looked as if he had been struck, carefully examining Shi Jin before saying, "You've changed too much. The last time we met, you were just a foolish little brother who followed your older brother around, unable to distinguish friend from foe and as dumb as they come."

Xu Chuan was definitely a lawyer, with a sharp tongue.

Shi Jin snorted coldly, deliberately teasing the photo in his hand and saying, "So that's why you tried so hard to sow discord between us, hoping that I wouldn't get too close to Shi Weichong and the others? Oh no, that doesn't sound right. It makes it seem like you were trying to help me, but I understand perfectly well that you have no good intentions towards this 'imposter'."

Xu Chuan's gaze was fixed on the hand that was teasing the photo, his palm slowly clenching into a fist. "Let me think. You said something like this before, 'It's ridiculous that you can sit together peacefully. It's too funny.' So, you made me run away because you didn't want to see me, who looks very similar to Mr. Jian, sitting with Shi Weichong, who looks very similar to my dad. Did that make you feel uncomfortable, Xu Chuan? You're jealous, aren't you? Between you and my dad, Mr. Jian obviously cared more about my dad."

"He doesn't deserve it!" Xu Chuan suddenly exploded, standing up and trying to grab the photo in Shi Jin's hand. Shi Jin lifted the photo up and flipped it over.

The younger, chubby version of Jian Jinwen appeared in Xu Chuan's eyes.

Xu Chuan froze, and Shi Jin took advantage of the situation to stand up and knock on the door of the visiting room. When the prison guard came in, he said, "Cuff him again. He wants to attack me."

The prison guard approached and roughly handcuffed Xu Chuan. Xu Chuan was once again restrained, his expression turning ugly as his gaze remained fixed on Shi Jin's hand holding the photo.

Shi Jin waited until Xu Chuan was handcuffed and seated before reaching under his eyelids and pulling out a childhood photo of Jian Jinwen. He then flipped it over and placed it next to a photo of Jian Jinwen as a teenager.

Meeting Xu Chuan's gaze, he said, "My father may not deserve to sit next to Mr. Jian, but likewise, you don't deserve to have Mr. Jian's photos. Xu Chuan, think carefully. If you anger me, you won't gain anything."

Xu Chuan struggled to keep the photo, but it was useless. He could only watch as Shi Jin took it away. Memories flooded his mind of the young Shi Jin he had glimpsed earlier.

After a long silence, Xu Chuan finally spoke up, "Yes, I am not worthy... At first, I approached Jinwen with a mocking attitude. He must have sensed it and kept his distance, only being polite to me. I am not worthy, but Shi Xingrui is even more despicable. He betrayed Jinwen and hurt him. He deserves to live a life chasing after nothingness. Why were you even born? Why did you give him the satisfaction he craved? You're the one who destroyed everything!"

As Shi Jin looked at his malice and anger, he pointed to the photo and said, "So this is the reason why you conspired with Xu Jie to harm me? Just because my birth satisfied Shi Xingrui's twisted pursuit? Because of this face of mine? Unable to express your suppressed emotions, you vented your anger on an innocent child. You are truly cowardly and despicable. Xu Chuan, does Mr. Jian know about your perverted and malicious behavior?"

It was like a slap in the face, and Xu Chuan's expression stiffened. His heightened emotions quickly subsided, and he slumped in his chair, head bowed.

"I don't have time to waste with you like this," Shi Jin spoke again, his tone turning cold. "Tell me what I want to know, or when I return to B City, I will immediately go to Mr. Jian's adoptive father and Mr. Jian's grave to have a good chat with them about the good deeds you did back then and now."

"No, you can't! Don't disturb them! I promised Jinwen to take care of his family!" Xu Chuan immediately looked up, his emotions seeming to collapse again, his expression even showing a hint of panic.

Shi Jin said, "From a blood relationship standpoint, I should also be considered Mr. Jian's family."

Xu Chuan froze, looking at his expression, then quickly moved his gaze away because of his appearance. He was silent for a while and said, "Give me ten minutes, and I'll tell you everything."

Without a word, Shi Jin got up and left, seemingly leaving the photo on the table by accident. He walked out the door without looking back.

Xu Chuan looked at the photo on the table, so close yet so out of reach. His emotions flickered in his eyes before finally settling into darkness.

......

After chatting with Number Two outside for a while, Shi Jin pushed open the door to the visiting room again ten minutes later. He sat down across from Xu Chuan and placed his arm on the two photos.

Xu Chuan had regained his composure and gestured towards his hand, saying, "Unlock this."

Shi Jin didn't make things difficult for him and called for the prison guard to come in.

The situation returned to square one, with the two men facing each other again. A glass of water sat in front of each of them, but this time the atmosphere between them was no longer so tense.

"The person who wanted to harm you was Xu Jie... and me," Xu Chuan spoke up, lifting the glass of water in front of him without looking at Shi Jin. His tone was calm as he continued, "You said you wanted to know the whole truth from back then. Fine, I'll tell you everything. I just hope that after you hear it all, you won't use my past to disturb Jinwen's peace."

"Okay, I promise," Shi Jin replied.

Xu Chuan glanced at him before taking a sip of water and saying, "I trust you. You're different from everyone in the Shi family... I've known that for a long time."

......

Just as Shi Jin had suspected, Xu Chuan had intentionally approached Jian Jinwen under the arrangement of Shi Xingrui back then. It was a combination of interest and curiosity that led Xu Chuan to take on the job.

But he never expected that his curiosity would cost him his entire life. Jian Jinwen was truly a good person. It only took one year for Xu Chuan to consider him a true friend and gradually learn about the entanglement between Jian Jinwen and Shi Xingrui.

Back then, Xu Chuan was more pragmatic and lacked a conscience due to his hidden family life. He sympathized with Jian Jinwen, who was kept in the dark, but still chose his own interests. He didn't reveal the truth to Jian Jinwen and even allowed Shi Xingrui to use his name to contact Jian Jinwen.

Sometimes, even a person themselves may not realize the changes in their emotions. By the time Xu Chuan realized his feelings for Jian Jinwen had changed, it was already too late. Jian Jinwen knew he didn't have much time left and suddenly approached Xu Chuan, saying something that nearly scared him to death.

"He said, 'I already know.'" Xu Chuan clenched his water cup, his voice no longer calm. "I didn't dare ask him what he knew. I just ran away. The next day, when I gathered the courage to come back and talk to him, the doctor said he had already passed away. Do you know, I went to the hospital at eight in the morning, and the doctor said his heart stopped at seven in the morning. It was only one hour... I didn't get to see him one last time. I can never ask him what he knew."

Shi Jin furrowed his brow, feeling a bit uneasy listening to Xu Chuan's story. "He must have realized that he didn't have much time left, that's why he came to talk to me, but I ran away." Xu Chuan took a deep breath to steady his voice and continued, "I missed the chance to say goodbye to Jinwen, but Shi Xingrui didn't. Jinwen was clearly in so much pain, yet he still left a farewell letter for Shi Xingrui. Why? Why does Shi Xingrui deserve it? Jinwen hoped in the letter that Shi Xingrui could break free from his past and live a happy life, but is he worthy of it? He can't even admit that he likes Jinwen, he should live in pain for the rest of his life!"

"I didn't give the letter to Shi Xingrui, I burned it," Xu Chuan suddenly turned cold, staring at his own eyes filled with coldness in the water glass, and said, "Shortly after that, Xu Jie's parents heard from somewhere that I was doing well at the time, and contacted my parents, hoping that I could help Xu Jie find a better job."

Shi Jin's eyes flickered, his expression serious, knowing that the key point was coming.

"I didn't want to help, a group of trash who bullied my parents back then, a group of trash who lived a thousand times better than my parents, why should they come to me for help?" Xu Chuan said coldly, his thoughts already completely drawn to the past, "But in the end, I still helped, my dad is a soft-hearted person, I couldn't resist him."

Back then, although Xu Chuan had promised to help Xu Jie find a job, he didn't really put much effort into it. He only planned to find a mediocre company to send Xu Jie off. However, Xu Jie was very purposeful and applied to Ruihang with her resume. She also took the opportunity to talk to Shi Xingrui and mentioned that Xu Chuan was her brother.

At that time, Shi Xingrui had just lost Jian Jinwen not long ago and was emotionally dependent on Xu Chuan, who could reminisce about Jian Jinwen with him. When he heard that Xu Jie was Xu Chuan's sister, he immediately generously hired her as his assistant.

Shi Jin was surprised to hear this. So Shi Xingrui knew about Xu Jie's relationship with Xu Chuan? And later on, Shi Xingrui was always wary of Xu Chuan, probably because of this relationship between him and Xu Jie?

"I was very angry at the time. I understood that Xu Jie had probably already seen the potential of Ruihang and wanted to use me as a stepping stone to enter the upper echelons of the company. I went to Shi Xingrui and told him that my relationship with Xu Jie was not good, and I hoped he could fire Xu Jie or not let her take on important positions such as assistant. But after he listened, he said that running a company cannot be based solely on personal feelings. Xu Jie was capable and could stay."

Xu Chuan sneered, very sarcastic, "His personal feelings are okay, but mine are not. Shi Xingrui is a hypocritical bastard with double standards."

Shi Jin saw his expression and guessed that he was completely dissatisfied with Shi Xingrui here. "Xu Jie eventually became Shi Xingrui's assistant. She was indeed capable, but also ambitious. She not only saw the potential in Xingrui, but also had her eyes on him, wanting to become the wife of the CEO."

Xu Chuan's smile turned malicious and meaningful as he continued, "She came to me for help, saying she wanted to replace the person in Xingrui's heart and be with him. I couldn't stand seeing Xingrui pretending to be a romantic while doing disgusting things, so I helped her out."

Shi Jin furrowed his brows as he looked at him. "Xu Jie found an opportunity to climb onto Shi Xingrui's bed and became pregnant. Of course, Shi Xingrui did not want to take responsibility, but how could I not try to persuade him? I even brought up Jinwen's name and urged him to have a new life, not to let Jinwen worry even after death. Shi Xingrui was very conflicted. He also wanted to break free from the endless pain of missing him, so he followed my advice and decided to try with Xu Jie."

Shi Jin was stunned. He never expected that Xu Jie was not someone that Shi Xingrui had provoked, but rather someone who schemed her way to the top, with Xu Chuan as an accomplice. No wonder she was the only woman among all of Shi Xingrui's women who was not similar to the original white moonlight, Jian Jinwen. It turns out that she was not a substitute that Shi Xingrui had found, and at that time, Shi Xingrui never even thought of finding a substitute.

"It's quite interesting, isn't it? Shi Xingrui has a woman and a child now, so he no longer has the right to yearn for Jinwen," Xu Chuan looked at Shi Jin with a smug and sinister smile. Then quickly, his smile slowly faded and became gloomy. "But I didn't expect Xu Jie to be such a waste. She couldn't even handle Shi Xingrui, and not only did she fail to marry him during her pregnancy, but also because of that damn postpartum depression, she blurted out about her and my plan to get to Shi Xingrui."

Shi Jin frowned deeply, recalling how Shi Xingrui began his crazy search for a surrogate mother after that incident. He suspected that Shi Xingrui's last bit of conscience disappeared with the betrayal of his friend Xu Chuan and the false new life.

"Shi Xingrui had completely lost his mind. He figured out my feelings for Jinwen and realized his own betrayal towards Jinwen. He helplessly kicked Xu Jie and her child out of their home and also removed me from the management team of Ruihang," Xu Chuan said with a hint of indifference.

"He probably investigated both my family and Xu Jie's family and discovered our conflict. So, he made a decision that made me hate him but also left me powerless. He actually started supporting Xu Jie's family with money because he knew that the family I disliked the most would be the greatest revenge against me. And he left me behind to watch Ruihang soar to new heights, but I could no longer participate. He was arrogant and crazy, but unfortunately, he had the ability. I did not.

"I had to make a choice. I could only keep one and chose to work wholeheartedly for him. Because I needed to restrain Xu Jie. She ruined my career, and I must make sure she can never achieve her dreams. As long as I am here, she will never become the wife of the president of Ruihang!"

"You're all crazy," sighed Shi Jin, unable to comprehend his thinking.

Xu Chuan chuckled at his words and said, "Being crazy is great. Only the insane can really hit people where it hurts. Look at Xu Jie, she never received recognition from Shi Xingrui until the day she died. She couldn't even publicly acknowledge her relationship with him. It wasn't until after Shi Xingrui's death that she could flaunt her status as his 'original wife'. Isn't that hilarious? Don't you think it's fun?"

Shi Jin fell silent, forced to admit that both Shi Xingrui and Xu Chuan's methods were ruthless.

"She, Xu Jie, not only can forget about becoming the wife of the CEO of Ruihang, but also forget about being the only woman in Shi Xingrui's life and giving birth to his only child."

Xu Chuan's tone suddenly turned malicious, "I've said it before, Shi Xingrui is already insane, and crazy people are capable of doing crazy things. I found a woman whose profile looks very similar to Jinwen's, but the best part is that her facial features are nothing like Jinwen's, so her appearance won't tarnish Jinwen's reputation. Then, I placed the poster of this woman's dance performance on Shi Xingrui's desk."

Shi Jin was shocked and looked at Xu Chuan in disbelief, "It was you..."

He had always thought that Shi Xingrui's search for a replacement was his own initiative, but now it seemed that Xu Chuan had intentionally guided him.

"What's wrong with me? If Shi Xingrui had strong enough feelings for Jinwen, he wouldn't have been tempted at all," Xu Chuan responded coldly. Suddenly, he lowered his head and avoided eye contact, saying, "But Shi Xingrui is even more rational than I imagined. He didn't recklessly go find that woman, but instead began investigating her situation. He only went to 'accidentally' meet her and make a deal with her when he was fully prepared. He wants that woman to have a child, and it must be a son. I have to admit, when it comes to madness, I can never match him. I just wanted to trap him in the pursuit of something unreal, but he's twistedly trying to create a child that looks exactly like Jinwen.

"But how is that even possible? I watched him go crazy, watched him go from one woman to another, watched Xu Jie jump up and down, but she could only grit her teeth and accept it because of the benefits."

Xu Chuan's tone lowered: "A few years later, Shi Xingrui suddenly stopped his madness. I thought that was enough. Four women and four children were enough to drive Xu Jie crazy, and I was a little tired... If everything stopped here, it would be great. Shi Xingrui would cultivate the five children like casting a net, and I would help him choose a successor for Ruihang, anyone would do except for Shi Weichong, to completely drive Xu Jie crazy... But unfortunately, your mother appeared."

Shi Jin couldn't help but tighten his grip on the water glass. "She looks so much like Jinwen, in appearance, temperament, and even the way she speaks and expresses herself. Even her gentle and kind nature is especially like Jinwen."

Xu Chuan raised his hand to support his face, his voice becoming dangerous.

"Shi Xingrui seemed to have found a new life, his whole person radiant with happiness. I just looked at him and knew he was very happy. He wanted to marry your mother, he even no longer cared about those few children, his heart full of hope."

"What did you do?" Shi Jin couldn't help but ask.

"I didn't do anything...I did nothing wrong. It was Xu Jie who did something." Xu Chuan suddenly looked up at Shi Jin, his smile mocking and satisfying. "Xu Jie finally realized that she can never compare to a dead person, and soon she won't even be able to compare to a perfect substitute. She was getting old, facing the flower-like Yun Jin, she's simply jealous to the point of madness. She watched as Shi Xingrui lifted Yun Jin up to the sky, watched as Yun Jin gave birth to you, hoping that Shi Xingrui would abandon Yun Jin and you like he did with other women. But she was disappointed, Yun Jin was different, and you, this child, was also different."

Shi Jin's heart rate slowly increased, realizing that he must have overlooked something important.

He questioned again, "What did she do?"

"Those who are innocent and kind are the easiest to be hurt," Xu Chuan spoke in a hushed tone, his face contorted with excitement. "Your mother was protected too well by Shi Xingrui, but also deceived too cruelly by him. Once a corner of the fairy tale kingdom is shattered, all the remaining beauty will collapse and be destroyed.

"Xu Jie herself suffered from postpartum depression, so she knows best what women fear after giving birth. She made a hole in your mother's dream of love, and with a bang, everything crumbled and fell apart. The naive princess couldn't bear reality and chose to end her own life."

As Shi Jin listened, he felt dizzy and his heart was suddenly set ablaze with anger.

He lost all sense of reason and couldn't help but storm over to grab Xu Chuan's collar, shouting furiously, "Do you have no humanity?! Every crime has its perpetrator, and because of your selfish desires, so many innocent people have been dragged down. My mother was barely twenty years old when you forced her to her death! You damn perverts!"

Xiao Si was taken aback and quickly tried to calm him down, saying, "Shi Jin, calm down, calm down."

"Shi Jin!" Number Two rushed in from outside and gave Xu Chuan a cold glance. He hugged Shi Jin from behind and dragged him out of the visiting room, forcefully closing the door behind them.

After leaving the visiting room, Shi Jin's overheated brain quickly cooled down. He raised his hand to his forehead and let out a sigh before saying, "I'm sorry, I lost my composure."

Although he was mentally prepared to not hear anything pleasant today, he couldn't help but feel angry for the innocent person who was hurt.

"It's just too despairing. Why can't good people have a happy ending?" Shi Jin exclaimed.

Number Two, seeing his distressed expression, furrowed his brows and reached out to ruffle his hair, saying, "Those perverts who did wrong should be the ones apologizing and paying the price, not you."
