Actually, he was lying to Zhang Yijie, because he had no idea where he could run into Cen Zeng. He couldn't just stake out the library, or lie in wait day and night around the School of Medicine buildings.
He did have the other's class schedule in his head, but it was for the next semester.
After thinking it over, the only one he could still torment was Chen Ziheng.
However, Chen Ziheng had no intention of dealing with him and calmly told him to get lost. The guy was always like this. Every time Cheng Shuo met with Xing Ji, he would enter a ten-day state of being "allergic" to Cheng Shuo, unable to pull himself out of it for a long time.
Anyone who didn't know would think it was just as Xing Ji said—that Cheng Shuo was pursuing Chen Ziheng.
He thought for a moment, then smiled.
"If you ignore me again, I'm going to post on the forum under my real name that I'm going to start pursuing you."
Five minutes later, he sent a question mark, and Mr. Chen Ziheng fearlessly blocked him.
'If you're going to ignore me, then you won't mind if I borrow your name to find Zheng Yi, right?'
Cheng Shuo was utterly fearless. Relying on his memory, he added Zheng Yi on WeChat and wrote: I'm Cheng Shuo, a friend of Chen Ziheng. The person sitting across from me at the library yesterday left their student ID card behind. I think their name is Cen Zeng. He said you're from the School of Medicine and asked me to check with you.
After waiting for an hour, the person on the other end actually accepted his WeChat request.
Just as planned.
Zheng Yi said she didn't have Cen Zeng's WeChat, but she tagged him in the main group chat. The person was probably in class and didn't reply.
Cheng Shuo said it was okay and asked, "Do you have his class schedule? It must be a hassle to lose a student ID card. How about I go find him directly after my class?"
Zheng Yi replied, "Wait a moment." A while later, she sent him a picture of a schedule, saying she got it from one of his dorm mates and it should be about right. She also told the roommate that someone would be returning an ID card to Cen Zeng.
With the schedule in hand, he replied with a crisp "Thank you."
Then, just as he was striking a pose while waiting for the class to end, Mr. Chen Ziheng, who had just blocked him, suddenly came back to life and sent him a snippet of his chat history with Zheng Yi.
In it, Zheng Yi was asking Chen Ziheng if he knew Cheng Shuo, saying that Cen Zeng had specifically added her on WeChat to tell her that he hadn't lost his student ID card.
Chen Ziheng clearly didn't understand the connection and replied, utterly confused, "I know him. He's a psycho. What's up?"
"Who's Cen Zeng? Sounds a bit familiar."
Zheng Yi sent her chat history with Cheng Shuo.
Chen Ziheng replied, "I'll go ask him what kind of crazy stunt he's pulling."
"What's wrong?" Cheng Shuo was trying hard not to laugh. "I wanted to get to know the top student from the School of Medicine, so I borrowed your connection."
He even politely typed "Thanks a lot," and the red exclamation mark reappeared. Chen Ziheng had blocked him again.
Just then, he looked up. A group of people in white lab coats was filing out.
He squinted, found Cen Zeng among them, and said, "Care to get acquainted?"
The other person glanced at him. While taking off the clothes splashed with some unknown liquid and stuffing them into a bag, he replied calmly, "Sorry, I have another class."
And then he just walked straight away.
Cheng Shuo stood there, not angry. With the schedule in hand, if it didn't work this time, there was always the next.
By the third "chance encounter," Cen Zeng finally showed a reaction. He calmly turned his head and gave Cheng Shuo, who was pretending to admire the scenery in the hallway, a faint glance.
Cheng Shuo waved at him and asked, "Have you eaten?"
The person didn't stop, just gave a slight nod to the person beside him and walked away with calm composure.
Before entering the classroom, Cen Zeng quietly counted: three times. But he was too busy today and had no time to deal with someone he had seen for three consecutive days.
It wasn't that he had no experience rejecting people. In many cases, it shouldn't even get to the point of rejection. All he had to do was ignore them. If the person took the hint, they wouldn't show up again.
Then came the fourth time, and the fifth.
It was a Saturday, and the clinical skills training was scheduled for the morning. He woke up with a very slight headache.
'I probably won't see that person.'
But as he left the classroom, he once again came face to face with the familiar face.
They had seen each other so many times in just a few days that even his roommate Xu Bihui, who had moved out long ago but had a nearly identical class schedule, found him familiar. "Isn't that the guy from yesterday?"
Cen Zeng frowned. "You go on ahead. I'll go ask him."
Cheng Shuo watched as the person finally walked up to him and stopped.
Then he spoke first, "Come with me."
He followed Cen Zeng to the emergency exit.
"The sixth time." Cen Zeng got straight to the point. "What is this for?"
He calculated when he could get to the lab today to finish the sudden task from Director Li, how many hours of sleep he could get at night, and determined that if he slept for four hours, he'd have an hour and a half to spare. Finally, he diverted his attention to look at the person.
"Want to get to know each other? My name is Cheng Shuo. Cheng as in 'program,' Shuo as in 'new moon'." The person opposite him was smiling, his face incredibly handsome and sunny. He was dressed in a neat and fitting trench coat, so handsome he should be sold off to play the sunny male lead in an idol drama, not blocking the doorway to their clinical skills training classroom, listening to the countless screams of advanced medical simulators when they pressed the right spots. Cen Zeng disliked that kind of mechanical sound; he would rather listen to a rabbit scream.
He was unmoved. "What is this for?"
"You're so good-looking, have you never been hit on before?" the person asked him with a grin. "Tell me your name, and I'll tell you."
Cen Zeng turned to leave.
The handsome guy, who dressed like he was about to walk a runway every day, grabbed him. "If you don't tell me, I'll be back to wait for you the day after tomorrow. That'll be the seventh time."
'So troublesome. Being alive is troublesome enough, I don't want any more trouble.'
'I'll get rid of him today.'
He thought for a moment, not bothering to argue with the person anymore, and said, "My name is Wu Yin. Wu as in 'mouth and sky,' Yin as in 'Zhao Kuangyin'."
After speaking, he continued, asking coldly, "What do you want from me?"
'Why did he pick his unlucky roommate's name?' Cheng Shuo almost lost his composure. He took a breath and said with a smile, "Take a guess?"
Cen Zeng couldn't be bothered to guess. This was an unfamiliar face, but he had heard the name in passing gossip. After wracking his brain for a bit, he remembered: the famous handsome scumbag of X University. A real scumbag, a real looker, and really rich.
"If you want to date me, I have a paternal history of hereditary mental illness, depression with an accompanying anxiety disorder, and I'm currently on medication.
Most antidepressant medication comes with the side effect of decreased libido. In layman's terms, I'm impotent right now. I'm also very busy and have no time." He began to spin a half-true, half-false tale.
"If you want to be friends with benefits, same thing, I'm impotent." He looked at the person before him impassively.
"I thought you'd at least say you like girls."
"If a girl were following me, I would tell her the truth just the same," Cen Zeng answered calmly.
Cheng Shuo really wanted to laugh. 'On medication, my ass. Impotent, my ass.' He relaxed a little. The guy still had the energy to reject people and could lie so calmly. It sounded like he wasn't as terribly sick as he would be half a year later.
'But so when he wasn't yet terminally ill, he would actually reject me, huh?'
"Oh..." Cheng Shuo replied. "You're that confident I've taken a fancy to you?"
"If you're looking to dig up gossip on other people..." Cen Zeng's expression didn't change at all. "I'm at the bottom of my grade, have a terrible relationship with my roommates, am on the verge of dropping out, and can only keep up with my coursework by pulling all-nighters. I'm an outcast."
"Actually, I have taken a fancy to you, number one in the department," Cheng Shuo said lazily. "And I don't mind you being impotent. In fact, it's perfect. I'm asexual. I only love Plato. My reputation might not be great, but that's also the reason I broke up with all those people before."
'Hilarious. As if I don't know whether you're impotent or not? If we're competing in spouting bullshit, then let's see who's better.'
Cen Zeng looked at him and turned to leave.
"Let's get to know each other..." He lowered his voice and began an OOC performance of being on the verge of tears, while his other hand gripped Cen Zeng's arm tightly.
With the strength he got from lifting weights, there was no way Cen Zeng was breaking free.
He lowered his head slightly to look at the person before him. "What on earth do you want?"
Now he finally found the person opposite him a little interesting.
"Yo, so you don't believe what I say either, huh?" Cheng Shuo smiled. "I just want to be friends, is that okay?"
Cen Zeng frowned.
"Want to go to the cafeteria together sometime? I haven't tried the one here at the School of Medicine."
'One doesn't hit a smiling face.' He couldn't hide anymore, and drawing attention these past few days had been annoying enough. Cen Zeng didn't want to be the subject of more gossip.
He replied, "Okay, but let's get this straight. No more engineering chance encounters in the future. Otherwise, I'll file a complaint with the department."
'As if complaining would do anything?' Cheng Shuo was speechless, but of course, he smiled and nodded in agreement.
Walking on the campus road, fallen leaves were already drifting and swirling by the wayside, adding a touch of tranquility. Cen Zeng took a deep breath, and his head finally stopped hurting.
Then the handsome guy beside him broke the atmosphere.
"Then you can start by telling me your real name," Cheng Shuo smiled. "I'm being so sincere about wanting to be your friend, why would you make up a fake name?"
"You know it's fake, and you know I'm first in the department. You should know my name too," Cen Zeng wasn't buying it.
He even remembered that the person Zheng Yi had found him through his roommate to deliver a non-existent student ID card for was called this.
But the person opposite him lowered his eyes, the corners drooping, and he actually looked a little wronged.
'So full of tricks. How could he have the nerve?'
Yet he still softened his voice slightly, "Cen Zeng."
"Which Cen, which Zeng?"
"Don't you have my student ID card?" he replied in a neutral tone. "Take it out and have a look yourself."
He had told a dry joke. He wore no expression, but the person opposite him gave him face and laughed out loud.
