He glanced at the phone. It was an unsaved number with the location showing the capital city.
Chu Yi ran into the bedroom and picked up the phone. Seeing the strange number, he froze. "Who is it?"
"Pick up and see. Might be you made a big overseas purchase in Thailand - bought yourself an elephant," Yan Hang said.
Chu Yi laughed and answered the call. "Hello?"
No sound came from the other end.
"Hello?" Chu Yi tried again. "Who's this?"
Still no response. He brought the phone close to his eyes. Yan Hang suddenly flipped over, knelt at the edge of the bed, grabbed his hand and tapped the speaker button on the phone.
Chu Yi looked at him, stunned.
"Ask again," Yan Hang whispered.
"Hello? Say something?" When Chu Yi spoke again, his voice trembled uncontrollably.
He had realized what Yan Hang meant.
The person on the other end of the line could be his dad.
As the silence continued, his hand started shaking. By the time the call disconnected, his whole body quivered.
Still holding the now silent phone, he stared at Yan Hang.
His heart raced, his vision became slightly blurred, and everything was pulsating along with his heartbeat.
"Who...was it?" he asked.
"Don't know," Yan Hang took his phone and put it aside, tilted his chin up with a finger and looked at him. "Puppy?"
"Was it...my dad?" Chu Yi looked at him. "Was it?"
"Don't know," Yan Hang said softly. "Could be a wrong number."
"Why wouldn't they say anything...if it's a wrong number?" Chu Yi's voice still shook a little.
Yan Hang didn't reply. He reached out and hugged him tightly. "It's okay. Who cares who it was. You're fine now and that's all that matters. Don't worry about others."
"Okay." Chu Yi hugged his waist.
His arm touched Yan Hang's smooth warm skin. It felt solid and reassuring.
He closed his eyes, consciously steadying his breath and slowly calmed down.
"Chu Yi," Yan Hang released him and looked at his face.
"Hmm?" Chu Yi looked back at him.
"Don't overthink," Yan Hang said. "Got it?"
"Yeah." Chu Yi nodded slightly.
"Keep your promise to me," Yan Hang said.
"I will." Chu Yi smiled.
"Go to sleep," Yan Hang patted his face. "Some things can only be waited out. Just live well one day at a time."
"Okay," Chu Yi responded.
After turning off the lights and lying down, Chu Yi very carefully scooted closer to Yan Hang's side.
"Work hard tomorrow and help me put the comforter on," Yan Hang said. "Time to switch to a bigger one."
"Okay," Chu Yi turned to look at him. "But didn't you say your wounds have healed?"
"Yeah, so?" Yan Hang turned his head.
"Then how come you still can't put on a comforter yourself?" Chu Yi said. "That means you're not fully healed yet."
"Dumbass," Yan Hang said. "I just don't want to deal with the comforter. Changing bedding is the most annoying thing ever."
"Well I also hate changing bedding," Chu Yi said.
"Too bad, grin and bear it," Yan Hang said.
"Bullying me?" Chu Yi sighed.
"Who else can I order around if not you?" Yan Hang said.
"...Fine," Chu Yi sighed again. "My ears are so droopy from anger now."
"Roll over," Yan Hang laughed and reached out to pinch his ear, "let me see if you've rolled over."
Yan Hang's fingertips were a bit cool, but when he pinched his ear tip, he felt a numb heat.
He stared at Yan Hang.
Today, the curtains on the balcony floor-to-ceiling windows were not fully drawn, and some moonlight leaked in through the curtain cracks.
Yan Hang's face appeared indistinctly before him.
A clear yet soft contour.
The light touch of Yan Hang's lips on his today seemed to reappear on his lips.
He suddenly lowered his head, having no idea what he was trying to do or what he was doing.
When his teeth collided with Yan Hang's as he pressed down on Yan Hang's lips, he froze up, his whole body stiffening.
"Damn," Yan Hang swore indistinctly, probably hurt from the collision.
Chu Yi was instantly flustered.
It's over!
Crazy!
Dead!
Might as well die now!
Crack and die!
Die quickly!
Chu Yi's arm propped him up as he tried to leave before Yan Hang could hit him.
Just as he raised his head, Yan Hang hooked an arm over and grabbed his neck, then lifted a knee to flip him over to the side.
Lying on his back, he saw at least twenty ways Yan Hang could beat him flash before his eyes.
As Yan Hang grabbed his neck and pressed over, he felt like the first dog to be strangled to death for accidentally kissing someone after taking the wrong medicine.
When Yan Hang's lips touched his, his mind was still blank.
He just felt out of breath.
