The dorm was quiet inside and out. Even the guy pinned to the table by Chu Yi didn't make a sound, stunned along with the other participants and spectators of the fight.
Everyone was silent.
He was very surprised that his words "Done yet?" would have such an effect.
But the awkwardness wasn't over yet, because he didn't know if he needed to speak again, and what he should say.
After about ten seconds of being frozen, someone in the audience whistled.
Chu Yi quickly took the opportunity to let go.
Only then did the people in the room start moving, some getting up, some brushing off their pants.
The leader of the other group walked up to Chu Yi.
This guy was taller than Chu Yi. In Chu Yi's opinion, he was even half a head taller than Yan Hang, probably able to stand shoulder to shoulder with Li Ziqiang's younger brother Li Zihao.
Ah.
Thinking of Li Zihao, he suddenly felt a bit sentimental. In just one summer vacation, his classmates seemed to have been left behind in distant memories.
He never had any close relationships with any classmates. Once no one bullied him anymore, he lost the last bit of connection with all the classmates around him. His classmates no longer remembered him, and he didn't know where they went or how they were doing now...
The person standing in front of him cleared his throat.
Only then did Chu Yi suddenly realize that his mind had wandered. He quickly collected his thoughts, turned around and walked away.
As he turned, the guy spoke: "You..."
After Chu Yi's wandering mind returned, it was instantly controlled by his long-standing habit. With so many people, he didn't want to stand in the middle of the crowd.
So even though he heard this person speak up, and suddenly realized that he probably walked up to talk to him.
Maybe to provoke him, maybe to say something, or report his background to make it easier to seek revenge later...
But inertia kept him from stopping. He walked all the way to the window farthest from the crowd in the dorm, then turned his head to glance at the guy.
The guy had his mouth half open, his expression changing unpredictably. After making eye contact with Chu Yi for a second or two, he spoke again: "You're badass, I'll remember that."
The few people pushed through the crowd and left.
Chu Yi breathed a sigh of relief.
Actually, based on his many years of being bullied, this kind of fight doesn't end so easily.
He figured it was because they were in the dorm right now, and everyone was a freshman who didn't have a handle on each other yet, and were afraid of attracting school staff...
"Alright, disperse, disperse," Hu Biao waved at the spectators still standing at the door, closing the dorm door while saying, "Nothing more to see."
The door was about to close when it was pushed open again. Su Bin squeezed in.
"Damn you, I was fucking waiting for you!" Li Ziqiang went over as soon as he saw Su Bin, grabbing his collar. "I've never seen someone like you before!"
"What are you doing!" Su Bin shouted. "What! I have to go get beaten up for something that has nothing to do with me?"
"Forget it, forget it Brother Qiang," Hu Biao went to pull Li Ziqiang. "Calm down, we still have to go get our uniforms in a bit."
"Get what uniforms!" Li Ziqiang glared at him. "You don't have clothes to wear and need to go get some?"
"The military training uniforms," Hu Biao sighed. "We just made a big scene, don't attract the school leaders..."
"Forget it." Zhang Qiang glared at Su Bin.
Li Ziqiang let go, thought about it, and pointed at Su Bin in annoyance: "Don't make excuses. This has nothing to do with me, nothing to do with Zhang Qiang, did we fucking run? Nothing to do with Hu Biao either, did he run? If you don't dare fight you can squat there! It has even less to do with Chu Yi, he wasn't even back all night!"
"Sorry everyone," someone on the side said. "This is only related to me, dragging you all in."
"Don't say that, we're in the same dorm." Li Ziqiang waved his hand.
Only then did Chu Yi notice there was an extra person in the dorm. He glanced over.
A boy was standing near the miscellaneous shelf by the door, wiping his glasses at the moment. He looked quite gentle, but wasn't any weaker than Brother Qiang and Little Qiang when fighting earlier.
"Why the hell are you wiping those non-prescription glasses over and over." Zhang Qiang said.
"Gotta wipe any glasses," the guy smiled, put on his glasses, walked up to Chu Yi and extended his hand. "I'm Zhou Chunyang, thanks just now."
"Chu Yi." Chu Yi hesitated for a moment before reaching out to shake his hand.
It felt like the first time in his life to shake hands with someone, such a grand gesture. He almost extended his left hand.
"Let's go get the uniforms?" Hu Biao couldn't let go of getting the uniforms.
"The dorm leader can just go get them," Zhang Qiang said. "Who's our dorm leader?"
Everyone looked around at each other, finally turning to look at Chu Yi.
"No." Chu Yi quickly refused. He had never even been the leader of a 4-person group in elementary school. Let alone group leader, even if there were only two people, if one had to be chosen to do something it wouldn't be him.
Although being a dorm leader wasn't some big deal, things needed to get done. He was afraid he wouldn't be able to explain clearly.
But this simple and blunt "no" made the few people pause.
Chu Yi wanted to add something to make his tone seem gentler, but couldn't find the words.
"Then I'll go get them," Zhou Chunyang said. "After getting the uniforms, let's go out for lunch at noon, my treat."
"I'll go with you," Zhang Qiang said. "Better not go alone."
After the two of them left, Li Ziqiang walked over to Chu Yi's side and handed him a cigarette: "You're fucking awesome."
"No...I don't smoke." Chu Yi said.
"No way?" Li Ziqiang looked him up and down for a while, took back the cigarette and handed it to Hu Biao. "Don't pretend with me."
"Not pretending." Chu Yi said.
"Where did you go last night?" Hu Biao asked while holding the cigarette in his mouth. "Isn't your home far far away?"
"Friend's place." Chu Yi answered, suddenly feeling an inexplicable sense of pride and satisfaction.
Friend.
Not only do I have a friend, I can even stay overnight at my friend's place!
"You know people here?" Hu Biao said.
"Yeah." Chu Yi smiled.
"That's not bad," Hu Biao said. "Those guys just now are all locals, each one more arrogant than the last."
"What, happened?" Chu Yi asked. He had just returned to school and gone through all this commotion, and still didn't understand what had just happened.
"The leader knows Zhou Chunyang, they had a grudge before," Hu Biao said. "Last night they almost got into a fight, but the dorm manager came and stopped it. They slept on it but were still angry in the morning, so they came again."
"Let them come, next time they come we'll fight," Li Ziqiang said. "I'm telling you, I used to board at school before. A dorm is a gang, if we don't stick together, we'll all suffer later."
After saying that, he glanced at Su Bin.
Su Bin had been silent the whole time, lying on the bed playing with his phone.
Only when Chu Yi saw him playing with his phone did he remember that his own phone was still with him. So he walked over: "My p-phone."
Su Bin gave him a sideways glance, took out his phone, and just as Chu Yi was about to reach out and take it, he bypassed Chu Yi's hand and placed the phone on the table.
"Thanks." Chu Yi didn't mind this action too much. He was used to this kind of treatment long ago, and besides, Su Bin was helping him keep his phone safe.
Hu Biao next to him was a bit unhappy: "I'm not saying, Su Bin, we're in the same dorm, we'll be together for so long in the future, you're like this, how are we all going to get along?"
"The dorm is just a place to sleep," Su Bin said. "What's with forming little cliques."
"Screw you," Hu Biao said. "Come on, let's go stand outside for a bit."
The three of them stood in the hallway, leaning on the railing, chatting and watching the people coming and going downstairs.
Chu Yi took out his phone and sent Yan Hang a message.
-The people at our school are too fierce, as soon as I arrived I ran into a fight
Yan Hang was probably busy, and only replied after a while.
-Whoever provokes you, you fight them, don't be afraid, you can handle two or three people now no problem
-Mm
Chu Yi looked at the few chat records separated by a year, and felt a sense of warmth and security in his heart, like lying on cotton that had been sunned.
Hu Biao and Li Ziqiang were chatting next to him the whole time. Chu Yi didn't interject, just listened to them talk.
This was the first time in his life that he stood side by side with classmates in the hallway chatting together like this.
He finally understood why so many people liked to stand like this during breaks. This happy and relaxed feeling made people feel comfortable.
Listening to them chat, Chu Yi got a general impression of the people in the dorm.
Brother Qiang, Little Qiang, Hu Biao and him all had poor grades and couldn't get into a regular high school. Su Bin apparently had good grades, but his family was in a difficult situation, so he came here. He was probably very unhappy, feeling that he wasn't on the same level as them. Zhou Chunyang was a local and his family was especially rich. He was just here to pass the time.
Zhou Chunyang brought back the military training uniforms, then they all went to eat together. Naturally, Su Bin didn't join their 'little clique'.
As they were walking downstairs, Li Ziqiang expressed strong dissatisfaction that Zhou Chunyang had also brought back Su Bin's set.
"They were all bundled together, I brought back the sets for the two who didn't come," Zhou Chunyang said. "Did you expect me to unpack it on the spot and throw out his set?... Let's think about what to eat."
"You're a local, and you're asking us?" Hu Biao said. "You lead the way, we'll just eat."
"Then let's take a taxi," Zhou Chunyang said. "Let's go eat Western food."
"Western food?" Li Ziqiang glanced at him. "Not even eating seafood?"
"What's the rush, you think there won't be seafood to eat here?" Zhou Chunyang said. "It's mainly that I want to eat Western food today. I took my dad's card, it would be a waste not to swipe it on something expensive."
"Western food it is," Hu Biao clapped his hands as soon as he heard "expensive". "Western food."
Yan Hang stood in Chen Jinling's office, feeling a bit troubled. "Sister Chen, I really haven't written a summary before, let alone an all-English summary."
"Just follow this summary," Chen Jinling opened a drawer and took out a summary to give him. "Let me show you the ones I wrote before. The content is generally like this. Write with confidence, don't worry, I will help you correct any mistakes."
Yan Hang took the summary and looked at it.
"I know you don't want to be a team leader," Chen Jinling said. "Now we're just having you temporarily fill in for a period of time. Whether you want to go to the kitchen or do something else, it will be helpful for you to understand all the positions in the restaurant, right?"
"Mm," Yan Hang smiled. "I'll give it a try."
He hadn't told Chen Jinling that he didn't want to be a team leader, nor that he wanted to go to the kitchen. He could only say that Chen Jinling wasn't a team leader for nothing - she observed the people under her very carefully.
"Just email it to me directly when you're done writing it," Chen Jinling said. "Keep an eye on things for me later. I took the afternoon off and have to go to the hospital in a couple days, so I need to go back and pack."
"Okay," Yan Hang nodded. "Let us know if there's anything we can help with."
"I won't stand on ceremony with you all. You should also tell me if there's anything you need help with," Chen Jinling smiled. "After scolding you for so long, I'm afraid I'll feel uncomfortable if I can't scold you anymore."
When Yan Hang returned to the front hall, he felt the pressure was a bit immense.
During this time, Chen Jinling had actually been guiding him all along, explaining various work processes to him. But for Yan Hang, the pressure didn't just come from the team leader position itself.
He had worked in the restaurant for nearly a year without making any mistakes, and had even been directly praised by the supervisor a few times. But even now as just an acting team leader, there were still senior staff who had worked for several years and were still servers.
Growing up, he had always been carefree with his dad. Even if he wanted to go to the kitchen, he never had a proper plan. Suddenly having this job thrown at him, he really did feel a bit unsettled.
As soon as he returned to the bar, Zhang Chen came over and said softly beside him, "What's up? Did the handover happen?"
"Not yet," Yan Hang said. "Probably in a few days."
"Don't feel pressured," Zhang Chen said. "You have the ability and good interpersonal relationships. There won't be any problems. I'll help you too, I've been here longer than you."
Yan Hang glanced at Zhang Chen and smiled. "Thanks."
"You're welcome," Zhang Chen said. "Just teach me to make a couple more dishes next time."
At noon, customers gradually increased. Yan Hang stood at the bar watching. The ordering system had been changed a bit the past two days. Some servers were still not familiar with using it. He had to pay attention at all times and immediately go over to help if there were any problems.
He was very familiar with the work of a waiter, but standing from this angle, he discovered many things that he never noticed before - whose attire had issues, where the sanitation wasn't handled in a timely manner, which table of customers was dissatisfied, where the table setting was incorrect...
He had nowhere to relieve this tension and pressure. At times like this, he would especially miss his dad.
Cui Yi treated him very well, but after all, he was just his dad's friend. He couldn't say whatever he wanted like he could with his dad, and Cui Yi's work itself kept him busy as a dog every day.
A few customers came in through the door, and Zhang Chen immediately went over to greet them.
Among these waiters, this little girl had to be the one who reacted the fastest, just a bit too careless, making mistakes from time to time.
After Zhang Chen seated the few customers, Yan Hang only then noticed that they looked like students.
Their restaurant's prices were quite high, and students generally wouldn't come here for a meal.
He looked a couple more times and suddenly froze.
A student facing this direction raised his head, glanced towards him, and froze at the same time as him.
When Chu Yi stood up and walked towards the bar, the others were ordering, and Zhou Chunyang called after him, "Hey, where are you going? Order the food first."
"Same as you," Chu Yi said, staring straight at the bar area.
"Alright then," Zhou Chunyang said.
In the taxi on the way here, he had actually been paying attention to the route the whole time. Yan Hang had told him the location of the hotel in the morning. When he saw that the routes overlapped, he had already started getting excited.
As soon as he entered the restaurant, his first glance was sweeping back and forth across the faces of the surrounding waiters.
After scanning around and not seeing Yan Hang, he thought it wasn't the same place and was just feeling disappointed when he suddenly saw Yan Hang standing behind the bar.
He should have stood up and rushed over the first moment, but he stood frozen beside the table for several seconds, unable to move.
Too handsome.
In all his memories of Yan Hang's appearance, he was always casual - in casual clothes, sportswear, running shoes.
At most, he had seen Yan Hang in an ugly work uniform at the coffee shop.
And now, unexpectedly seeing Yan Hang in a black uniform made him almost unable to recognize him.
He had never imagined that Yan Hang had this side to him.
Walking over to the bar, Chu Yi felt that he was so excited he kind of wanted to skip.
"Sir, how may I help you?" Yan Hang asked with a smile on his lips as he walked up to the bar.
"Want to take, a photo of you," Chu Yi stared at him.
"Sorry," Yan Hang's smile became more obvious, "we're not allowed to take photos during work hours."
"Oh." Chu Yi was still looking at him.
"If you want to take photos of the waiters or supervisor," Yan Hang said, "you can only do it secretly."
"Hey," Chu Yi started laughing, "last time when I secretly t-took a photo, I just got a pot lid."
"I'll serve your dishes in a bit," Yan Hang said with a smile, "you can take your time photographing then."
"Why are your clothes d-different from others'?" Chu Yi looked him up and down.
"The supervisor's uniform," Yan Hang said, "just changed to this in the past two days."
"Really handsome," Chu Yi said.
"Always handsome," Yan Hang glanced at their table, "your classmates?"
"Mm, my dorm mates," Chu Yi also turned his head and saw that Zhou Chunyang was also looking this way. He even nodded and smiled at them.
"What happened with the fight today?" Yan Hang asked again.
"It's a long s-story..." Before Chu Yi could finish, a waitress came over from the side.
"Brother Hang, sorry," the little girl said, "the customer over there has questions about the dishes."
"I'll be right there," Yan Hang glanced that way and walked out from behind the bar. He said to Chu Yi in a low voice, "I'll treat you to dinner tonight, and you can tell me slowly then."
Chu Yi nodded and walked back, all the while watching Yan Hang's back.
Yan Hang's uniform fit very well, and this type of uniform pants made his legs look longer than the sweatpants Yan Hang usually wore. At this moment, he felt that Yan Hang's legs were 1.8 meters long.
"Your friend?" Hu Biao looked at him.
"Mm." Chu Yi nodded and sat back in his seat, his eyes still looking that way.
Sitting at that table was a foreign couple. After Yan Hang went over, they started talking.
Their voices were very low. At this distance, Chu Yi definitely couldn't hear what they were saying, but it certainly wasn't Chinese, and it seemed like they were speaking very quickly.
Chu Yi had always been very sensitive to speaking speed because his own speed was very slow.
Seeing Yan Hang's easy and smiling responses made him realize for the first time Yan Hang's English proficiency outside of his posts.
"I ordered you a cod," Zhou Chunyang said, "is that okay?"
"No problem, I've never eaten it before," Chu Yi said.
"Your friend is the supervisor, right?" Li Ziqiang said, "Why didn't you mention it when you said you were coming here earlier?"
"I didn't know he worked here," Chu Yi said.
"What's your friend's name?" Zhou Chunyang took a sip of water and asked softly.
"Yan Hang," Chu Yi glanced at him, "Why?"
"Nothing," Zhou Chunyang looked over there again, "When I came to eat with my dad before, I never saw him. The supervisor here used to be a beautiful woman."
"You probably only see beautiful women," Hu Biao said, "and don't notice the men."
"Not necessarily," Zhou Chunyang smiled.
After Yan Hang finished talking with that table of customers, he walked away. Chu Yi didn't have the nerve to keep staring at him.
But he was always a bit distracted. He didn't pay attention to what Li Ziqiang and the others were saying. Only when Yan Hang came over with the tray did he snap out of it.
"We're all Chu Yi's classmates, from the same dorm," Li Ziqiang said.
"I just heard him say that," Yan Hang smiled and put the dishes on the table, "You few have the best relationship."
"That's right, we just fought together with someone this morning," Li Ziqiang said, "Before school even starts, our auto repair major will be famous. In the future, our dorm will be relying on Chu Yi to cover us."
Yan Hang glanced at Chu Yi, who instantly felt a bit embarrassed, "Mis-misunderstanding."
"Can I have a business card?" Zhou Chunyang looked at Yan Hang.
"Sure." Yan Hang took out a card holder from his pocket, pulled out a card, and handed it to Zhou Chunyang.
Chu Yi suddenly felt a bit depressed.
Yan Hang had business cards, but he didn't even know it himself. If he had known earlier, he should have asked for one yesterday.
Although he didn't know what he would use the business card for.
"Give me one too," Hu Biao said, joining in on the excitement as soon as he saw it.
"I'll take one too," Zhang Qiang followed.
Yan Hang smiled and handed them business cards as well, then glanced at Chu Yi, "You don't need one, right?"
With just this one sentence, Chu Yi's mood suddenly lifted.
"I want one," he said with a smile.
Yan Hang then handed one to him as well, "Take your time eating, just call me if you need anything."
"Yan Hang," Zhou Chunyang looked at the business card, then turned to look at Yan Hang's back, "Your friend doesn't look very old, but he's already a supervisor?"
"He's especially, awesome," Chu Yi said.
"I can see that," Zhou Chunyang chuckled.
That must be obvious, he saw it long ago.
Chu Yi put Yan Hang's business card in his pocket, nestled against the lucky coin in its leather jacket.
Yan Hang personally served their table throughout the meal, and even sent over desserts and drinks. Chu Yi felt an indescribable sense of happiness.
This was the first time in his life he experienced this feeling. He couldn't even find a similar description for it.
This meal cost Zhou Chunyang quite a bit of money. Chu Yi didn't see the menu and didn't know the prices.
When Zhou Chunyang went to the bar to find Yan Hang to pay the bill, he heard Zhang Qiang and Hu Biao helping Zhou Chunyang calculate the bill. Only then did he suddenly realize that the Western restaurant where Yan Hang worked was very high-end.
"Isn't he not letting the waiter come over to settle the bill because he's afraid we'll feel burdened?" Hu Biao said, "Only he can afford to treat us. We usually just eat skewers."
"When someone treats you, just eat," Li Ziqiang said, "What are you sighing about? It's not like he asked you to return the favor."
Chu Yi remained silent the whole time, propping his chin up and looking towards the bar.
Zhou Chunyang said something, and Yan Hang smiled.
Tsk. Chu Yi picked up his glass and gulped down a couple mouthfuls of water.
To settle the bill, he had to go to the bar to find the supervisor. Today, the amount Zhou Chunyang spoke to Yan Hang was more than what Chu Yi said to Zhou Chunyang.
