Although the big dog looked fierce and charged over aggressively, since it was still quite dark in the public space, he calmed down after just two bites. He wiped his mouth and took a sip of mango juice.
Yan Hang reached out to take a drink of his wine, and as he put the glass down, he heard voices speaking from nearby. The voices weren't too loud but could still be heard clearly in the quiet atmosphere.
"Disgusting."
Yan Hang's hand had just left the glass when he heard this. His hand froze in mid-air for a moment.
His first reaction was to glance at Chu Yi.
Chu Yi was still holding his mango juice, sitting there motionless.
The voice that had spoken was female, and based on the direction, it came from the couple sitting diagonally behind Chu Yi.
"Forget it," the guy said softly.
"What do you mean forget it," the girl kept her voice at the same not too loud volume, "Being so disgusting in public!"
"Let's change tables," the guy said, "Out of sight, out of mind."
"Why should we change tables," the girl was unhappy, "If anyone should move, it should be them. They're lucky we haven't kicked them out of here since this isn't a gay bar."
"Keep your voice down," the guy said.
"Why should I keep my voice down," the girl raised her voice and waved her hand, "Waiter!"
Yan Hang looked at Chu Yi, a bit worried that he wouldn't be able to handle this.
But Chu Yi still looked rather calm, whether he was truly calm or just hadn't reacted yet in the moment.
"Puppy," Yan Hang called him.
"Hm?" Chu Yi looked up at him.
"It's fine," Yan Hang said.
"Okay," Chu Yi responded and then asked after thinking for a moment, "Should we...leave?"
"We'll leave when we want to leave," Yan Hang said.
Chu Yi didn't respond and just nodded.
The waiter who had been called over whispered something and then walked over to their table.
"Sorry to disturb you two," the waitress seemed a bit awkward, "but the couple over there wanted me to ask if you could change tables?"
"Change tables with them?" Yan Hang narrowed his eyes.
"No, not that," the waitress grew even more awkward. "They wanted to know if you could move to another table...we have plenty of open tables on the other side."
"Why?" Yan Hang asked.
"Because...they just feel, uh, they feel..." The waitress frowned, struggling to get the words out.
Yan Hang didn't want to put the server in an awkward position so he interrupted her, "It's fine, just have them come over themselves to ask. Basic manners, right?"
"Of course, sir, sorry about that," the waitress quickly nodded and apologized.
"Yan Hang," Chu Yi said softly, "Don't..."
"I won't fight," Yan Hang said. "Got it."
"That's not it," Chu Yi said.
"Hm? Then don't what?" Yan Hang looked at him.
"Don't hit anyone," Chu Yi said.
Yan Hang leaned back on the sofa and laughed. "Okay, I know."
"What do you mean by that!" The girl was probably very angry now, not bothering to control her volume at all as she stood up and yelled at them, "Something wrong with you!"
"Go on," Yan Hang turned his head, resting on his arm. "Louder please."
The guy also stood up, pointing at Yan Hang, "Say that again!"
"Louder please," Yan Hang said. "Come on guys, go ahead."
The guy shoved his chair back and charged at them.
The waitress hurried over to try and stop him but he pushed her aside.
Yan Hang watched as he rushed over and stood by their table before speaking again, "What's the problem?"
"Watch your mouth!" The guy pointed at him.
Yan Hang smirked.
Chu Yi, who had been silent and looking very nervous this whole time, lifted his head now and looked at Yan Hang's hand, "Put your hand down."
Yan Hang really wanted to whistle in that moment but held back, only raising an eyebrow.
The guy looked at Chu Yi and hesitated for a couple seconds before lowering his arm. He glanced back at his girlfriend and said, "Change tables. My girlfriend doesn't want to see gays, it's disgusting."
"She won't see us if you change tables," Yan Hang took a drink of wine. "She also won't see us if you leave."
"Why should we be the ones to leave!" The girl yelled from over there. "People like you shouldn't even go out in public! Shameless, kissing and groping like that!"
"You two look about one bed short of the same thing," Yan Hang said.
The guy flipped over a chair next to him, looking about to lunge at Yan Hang, but before he could make a move, Yan Hang was already on his feet. He grabbed the guy by the shoulders and half pushed, half flung him back.
His dad had used this move on him plenty of times, always leaving him resigned. Basically he'd get pushed down into sitting with one palm.
The effect was equally good here. The guy staggered back a step and plopped down on the chair he'd just tossed aside.
Just as the guy was about to stand back up, looking furious, embarrassed, and having completely lost face, Chu Yi suddenly stood up.
The guy froze.
Perhaps feeling he still had a chance one versus one but was now instantly facing two opponents, he fell into struggle between which would be more humiliating in front of his girlfriend.
Chu Yi picked up his mango juice and finished off the last sip, then looked over at Yan Hang.
Yan Hang felt like aside from his dad, Chu Yi was probably the only other person he could communicate so well without words. He let out a sigh, "I don't want to drink anymore."
Chu Yi picked up Yan Hang's leftover drink and downed that in one gulp too. Then he said, "Let's go."
Yan Hang grabbed his coat and followed behind Chu Yi, watching as he strode towards the exit with an impressive aura, showing no hesitation at all. He had to call out, "Brother Dog."
Chu Yi looked back at him.
"Could you wait for me to settle the bill first?" Yan Hang said.
"...Oh," Chu Yi came back to his senses then. "I'll get it."
"No no, I'll take care of it. How could I let you pay..." Yan Hang stopped him.
"But I wanted to treat you to drinks today at the bar," Chu Yi said anxiously.
"Stay put," Yan Hang looked at him.
Chu Yi hesitated, "Oh, okay."
Yan Hang went to settle the bill. As he was leaving, he saw that the girl was still glaring at them with an unhappy expression on her face.
Yan Hang ignored her and walked out of the shop with Chu Yi.
Once they were on the street, he didn't leave directly. Instead, he crossed the street to a small supermarket diagonally across to buy a pack of cigarettes.
After buying the cigarettes, he stood inside the supermarket door and looked over at the bar.
“What’s up?” Chu Yi asked.
“Do you want to get even?” Yan Hang glanced at him.
Chu Yi looked over in that direction and sighed softly, “No need.”
“Really?” Yan Hang asked.
“Really,” Chu Yi nodded, “Do you want to get even?”
“With that level of combat ability, I guess if I gave him a beating, I’d be the one catching fire,” Yan Hang said. “Not worth my time.”
“But you hit him too,” Chu Yi said.
Yan Hang clicked his tongue and looked at him.
“Because he hit first,” Chu Yi nodded. “I don’t care for those kinds of punks either.”
Yan Hang didn’t say anything, just looked at him and smiled for a long time.
